My dog has a slipped disc. How to relieve pain and aid healing?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 8 months old | 8 lbs

My mini dachshund was at the vet this morning and its a suspected slipped disc, he's been given 8 days of pain meds and we must restrict his movement.. Is there anything further I can do to to relieve his pain? Should I expect him to improve in the coming days? Its breaking my heart to see him hurting..

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately, intervertebral disk disease is the bane of all long backed dogs. The key to recovery is pain medication either in the form of a steroid like prednisone, or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as rimadyl, carprofen, metacam, etc. & STRICK rest. Ace must not jump, run, or be at all active while trying to heal. It can take 3 weeks for the disk to heal.
You can apply alternating treatments of heat & cold by warming a sock with rice in the microwave ( make sure it is warm & not hot ), using it on Ace for 10 minutes, then apply a bag of frozen peas for 10 minutes. You can do this twice a day, but make sure there is a towel between the heat & cold, & move the application frequently to prevent hot or too cold spots. If Ace remains painful, you can ask your vet for an appropriate additive to Ace's medication. A muscle relaxant might be appropriate, or additional pain medications in the form of tramadol or gabapentin. These things take time. Hopefully, he will feel better by tomorrow. Take care.

    Typical medications used for disc problems in dogs are a muscle relaxers, an anti-inflammatory, and pain medications, as well as rest. If your vet prescribe medications then the best thing you can do is restrict his exercise and do not allow him to run and jump on things. You may see some improvement in the next few days because of the medication but it is important to still restrict his exercise even if he is feeling better. If his signs become worse then you need to have him rechecked by your vet.

I agree with your veterinarian in that it takes several weeks on antibiotics to resolve. I would recommend that you consider contacting your veterinarian so that they consider prescribing something strong to treat his pain. I really hope he feels better.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are medications to help with back pain but none of them are over the counter unfortunately. The one thing you can do at home which is often times the most important component of medical therapy for back pain is rest him. This means limiting Buddy's activity to just walks to go to the bathroom but otherwise to keep him calm. I recommend that you have Buddy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian can prescribe pain control medications. Good luck and have a good night!

My dog had a slipped disc. Is quick recovery after treatment normal?
Yes, if the condition is treated right away, then sometimes the partially prolapsed disc can slip back into its place and stops pressing on the nerve that caused her not to walk. However, since the discs are normally encased in fibrous material, this is usually damaged when the disc slips, so care must be taken that it does not happen again, ie, your dog should rest for the next few weeks, no jumping, no climbing stairs, no rough playing.

Can acupuncture help my dog's slipped disc if surgery isn't an option?
At our clinic we use a combination of anti-inflammatory medication such as prednisone, muscle relaxer such as Methocarbamol, cold laser therapy and acupuncture to help dogs recover. I find that the addition of acupuncture can certainly help a dog recover from this type of problem. If you are wondering whether or not to use this treatment, it won't hurt Sam so it is worth adding this in to the treatment of this condition to see if it helps. My dog's dislocated hip hurts, Rimadyl isn't working. What can I do?
Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Syo appears to be in some discomfort from his hip issue. If the Rimadyl does not appear to be doing the trick, there are other medications you can obtain from your veterinarian that may help in better pain relief. As far as at home ways to help reduce pain, I would recommend a heating blanket or heating pad to the effected area for 15-20 mins a few times daily. Be sure the heating pad is between a blanket when placed over the area to prevent burning. I hope this helps and I would recommend seeing Syo's veterinarian soon when they open so you can discuss other paid medications that may work better for Syo. Prednisone for dog's slipped disc: Does it dissolve or pinch nerves?
Hello. Your veterinarian was just trying to make things as simple as possible. The goal of the prednisone is to only reduce inflammation, & once this resolves, Slick should feel much better. What may happen is for the soft intervetebral disc to calcify, thus removing potential movement & subsequent pinching of the nerves. A calcified disc reduces mobility & thus pain, for the most part. An unexpected move or jerk could cause substantial pain. It is important to only walk Slick with a harness, & if need be, keep her on a good anti-inflammatory medication as needed. My dog's back and leg pain returned. What medication can help?
Sorry to hear about Clive. The mainstay treatments for orthopedic injuries are pain killers and anti inflammatories (NSAIDs). Since there may be a spinal / neural component to this, neuropathic medications and muscle relaxants may also come in very helpful especially during times of additional breakthrough discomfort. The type of medication to be dispensed will ultimately be a discussion with your primary vet, but NSAIDs that are common include carprofen (Rimadyl), deracoxib (Deramaxx), and meloxicam (Metacam). Other medications are things like opioids including tramadol and hydrocodone. In terms of the back, I would consider medications like gabapentin and methocarbamol to address this. There is another medication that I use in patients with refractory pain called amantadine, but I find it only effective when used in conjunction with NSAIDs. The periodic or daily use of many of these medications should be coupled with blood work at least twice yearly to be sure liver and kidney values are not elevating.
