My dog has a slipped disc and can't walk. Any non-surgical options?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 52 lbs

I was told Luna had a slipped disc. She cannot move her back legs. The vet said the only options were surgery or to put her to sleep. I cannot afford the survey. Is there any other option?

Oh dear, I am sorry to hear about the slipped disc. Once a patient becomes non ambulatory (unable to move legs), surgery is recommended. However, the success of the surgery and overall prognosis depends on how quickly surgery is performed. Usually, most pets that are taken to surgery within the first 24 hours after becoming non ambulatory will regain the ability to walk and urinate normally again. Pets taken to surgery after that 24 hour period do not have quite the same outcome, unfortunately. If Luna is not able to walk and has lost all sensation to her legs, there is about a 10% chance of regaining normal bladder and motor function. Sometimes pain medications and additional therapies such as cold laser therapy, acupuncture, water therapy, etc can be tried but with varying success rates.

My dog had a slipped disc. Is quick recovery after treatment normal?

Yes, if the condition is treated right away, then sometimes the partially prolapsed disc can slip back into its place and stops pressing on the nerve that caused her not to walk. However, since the discs are normally encased in fibrous material, this is usually damaged when the disc slips, so care must be taken that it does not happen again, ie, your dog should rest for the next few weeks, no jumping, no climbing stairs, no rough playing.

It seems like Loki may have a slipped disk or have a buldging disk. This is extremely common in dauschunds. It is ideal that he gets to a veterinarian as soon as possible as some of these cases (depending on how severe clinical signs are) require surgery with a neurologist. My senior dog has a blown disk and can't walk. What can I do?

You did not mention whether or not Pepper has been seen by your vet. If not, you need to have that done. If she can't walk then sometimes they also cannot urinate appropriately and this can cause serious issues. If you don't want her put her to sleep then you need to talk to your vet about all the options for her so that she can live comfortably and pain free. If she does have a disk issue there are medications that can really help with this problem that may even help her walk. Acupuncture and laser therapy can also help if those are available in your area. If she is not in pain and is in otherwise good health you can consider getting her a cart so her back legs are not dragging. Hope this helps.

Can acupuncture help my dog's slipped disc if surgery isn't an option?

At our clinic we use a combination of anti-inflammatory medication such as prednisone, muscle relaxer such as Methocarbamol, cold laser therapy and acupuncture to help dogs recover. I find that the addition of acupuncture can certainly help a dog recover from this type of problem. If you are wondering whether or not to use this treatment, it won't hurt Sam so it is worth adding this in to the treatment of this condition to see if it helps. My cat has a ruptured disc and is paralyzed. Can he walk again?

I would take him to a rehabilitation veterinarian who can do acupuncture also. I see many paralyzed animals that recover with neurological retraining exercises, laser, hydrotherapy and acupuncture. The sooner he receives treatment the better the outcome. Even if he doesn’t get 100% better many animals can still live a happy life with proper care from the owners.
