My senior lab has skin sores with yellow pus. What should I do?

It sounds like he might have a skin infection so he should be examined and treated by a vet. He may need an oral antibiotic to treat the infection. You could also bath him with a medicated dog shampoo and see if that helps too.

It sounds infected with the drainage and an odor. Because it is pendulous with a stalk it is easier to remove completely. Your vet can remove it and have it evaluated to be sure but may consider antibiotics first to help get the infection under control

It looks as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy, a skin mite (Demodex) or fleas. 

The allergy could be a due to a protein in your dog’s food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc. 

The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. This then leads to infection. Skin infections are typically characterized by large areas of hair loss, redness, crusting, flaking, and pustules. A thorough skin examination by your veterinarian should be able to determine the cause of the itch so it can be treated appropriately. Your dog will most likely need antibiotics to help clear up the infection and possibly an allergy/anti-itch medication like Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint to give some relief while the infection clears up. A medicated shampoo may be beneficial as well. I would also recommend he be on a good flea control routinely too. Once the infection has resolved a long term allergy medication (like Apoquel or Cytopoint) can be given on a regular basis to prevent any future problems. I hope this helps. That seems odd. Usually a yellow discharge indicates infection. I recommend to have Nova examined by the veterinarian. The doctor will likely shave the hair to get a better look at the skin. Unless this is tree sap or something else that she has simply walked into, infection of the skin is the next most likely cause. Protect the area from any scratching and have her examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Poor Emmitt! The lesions on his leg and muzzle could be due a bacterial skin infection (often from underlying allergies), ringworm, or mange. Make sure that he is receiving a high quality flea preventative regularly, such as Nexgard, Bravecto, or K9 Advantix II since flea allergies can lead to itching and subsequent skin infections. You can also try bathing Emmitt in an antimicrobial shampoo ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=27982 ), but use caution around his face and be sure to rinse and dry well. Also consider switching to stainless steel bowls rather than plastic or ceramic bowls if you aren't already using them in case the lesions on his face are related to an "acne-like" condition. Stainless steel is less porous than the other materials and tends to harbor less bacteria. If these skin lesions persist or worsen, Emmitt will need to take a trip to his vet for further evaluation. These look like localized areas of infection and look like they are causing Maddie some discomfort. I would recommend taking Maddie to the vet to be examined. The wounds/areas of infection may need to be clipped and cleaned. She will most likely need to be placed on an antibiotic to help the areas heal as well. If Maddie is very itchy, she may need a medication to help stop the itch so she does not continue to cause these sore areas. I hope this helps.
