My dog has a lump on her skin for a week. Is it a bug bite or serious?

Based on these photos, it does appear there is a little dot at the center of the lump, and you could be correct that this is some sort of insect bite. I would watch this lump over the next week or two. As long as it is slowly getting smaller, then I would not be concerned, however, if there is no change over the next couple of weeks, or it is getting bigger, firm, red, or painful, then seek veterinary attention. Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This looks like a possible bug bite based on how quickly this came about, and also the color and area that it is located. If it doesn't seem to bother Gracie, then I would recommend monitoring it for now to see if this resolves on its own within the next few days. You can apply a cold compress on the area (if needed) for 5-10 minutes to help with some of the swelling, and a very thin layer of Neosporin once every 12 hrs as needed; however, this is likely to resolve on its own as long as Gracie doesn't bother it and it doesn't spread. If the bump does appear to get worse over the next 24-48 hrs, then its best to get Gracie seen by your vet for stronger medication to get this to resolve. There is a slight chance that this is an infected pocket (abscess) that will require a short course of antibiotics and treatment to get this to heal well. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like a skin growth. I don't think it is a tick or any other skin parasite. Ticks feed on dogs for 3-4 days and then fall off. If this lump has been there for a few months it cannot be a tick or any other bug. Skin growths like this are common in older dogs. They are usually benign and not dangerous, but please show it to your vet the next time you take Lily in for an appointment.

I would keep an eye on this lump for now. As long as it doesn't get bigger over the days leading up to his appointment on the 28th, it doesn't appear to bother him, there are no behavioral or appetite changes during this time, and/or you don't see any redness, warmth to the touch, or pus from the lump, it's fine to wait until he has his vaccine appointment. Should you observe any of the signs that I mentioned above, then I would take him into the vet sooner. Don't let him scratch at it, as that could make it worse. If he does start scratching at it, making it bleed, then it's bothering him and have him seen by a vet sooner. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I do recommend all abnormal growths be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if they are an issue or not. Many of these can be diagnosed with an analysis of a needle sample. Good luck!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Lumps and bumps can always be anything, and unless you take a sample and send it for histopathology we cannot know for sure. However, it doesn't look like a wart, it could be a bug bite but it seems a bit more discreet than that, and bug bites are usually itchy. It looks most like a small mole or cyst. I recommend having it checked by your vet next time you are in the clinic. Otherwise just monitor it for now, if it doesn't go away in a couple weeks, or grows, then get it checked sooner.
