My dog has a weird skin growth. What is it and will it disappear?

I am sorry to hear about Daisy! Due to the size of this lesion and the fact that it isn't improving, I would recommend taking Daisy to the vet for examination of this swelling. I would be concerned that we could have a bacterial infection like an abscess, that this could be a spider bite or other insect bite, or possibly even a mass/tumor. The vet can examine the area and may try to aspirate the swelling (use a small needle to remove any fluid present or collect cells that may help identify the cause of the swelling and the best treatment). Portabella’s lesion is quite prominent. It’s possible that it could be an allergic reaction from contacting something, or a benign or malignant growth. Given her young age, a benign mass called a histiocytoma is quite possible. The good news is that these lesions resolve on their own in a few months without treatment. However, the only way to differentiate between different types of skin lesions is some diagnostic testing. There’s certainly no reason to panic or worry yourself, but I do think it would be best to have Portabella examined by your vet. Your vet may want to take some cells from this lesion for microscopic evaluation. I hope that everything goes well!

Lesions like this can be a few things including a healing wound, a skin tumor, an enlarged pore or a keratin horn. If this is a healing wound, you do not want to disturb it or it will delay healing. I recommend to check the area daily for the next 2 weeks. Skin wounds heal in 7-14 days so if the lesion is still present at that point, I recommend to have Lily Kate examined. Starting Lily Kate on an oral omega 3 fatty acid supplement may help to improve the over all condition of her skin but it may not change anything about the lesion. A skin tumor will need an aspirate to determine if it is cancerous or not, the other conditions require medical management or surgical removal to heal them. Make sure to protect the area from any licking or scratching. She may need to wear a shirt or an elizabethan collar (if she can reach the area to lick). If that is accurate, I recommend to have Sparkie examined by the veterinarian this week. Lesions like this can be many things and big concerns are melanoma, mast cell tumor or hemangiocytoma. If it is cancerous, you want to get it removed asap. The veterinarian will likely insert a small needle to collect some cells for analysis. If the area is completely flat, and the skin has the normal texture of the rest of the skin, you can likely continue to monitor it. Good Morning, Sorry to see Baby Boo is having problems. This growth looks like it could be a small growth or tumor, especially since it appears raised and ulcerated and is not going away. Normally, your local veterinarian will examine the lesion and perform tests to see if it is in fact cancer, then recommend removal and laboratory tests to confirm what type of growth. In some cases, your veterinarian will simple recommend removal or an excision biopsy to send off for a histopathology report. In all cases, the sooner the growth is examined and removed the better chance of complete removal and complete recovery without it coming back. From my initial view of the picture, it looks like you need to get an appointment and have it check soon, but looks like everything will go great based on the location and age of your dog. Hello, thank you for your question about Oona. Based on the photo that you've attached and the lack of symptoms I suspect that this is a benign skin lesion such as a blood blister, cyst, or mild infection of one of her sweat glands/hair follicles. Since Oona is not bothered by this lesion and it has not changed I would recommend continuing to monitor her. If at any point she starts to rub/scratch at the area or you notice it growing in size I would recommend having her seen by your veterinarian. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sending the picture! It appears to be a wart like growth with a small scab on top. These are common in small breed dogs. If it grows or changes rapidly, then I would still have her veterinarian check it out. Otherwise I do not suspect it will be a problem for her. You can try to clean the scab off for her. Good luck!
