Dog's skin detaching after abscess. Should I let him lick or bandage?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 11 months old

My dog skin is detaching . His right leg was little swelled and fever as well i took him to vet. He gave him antibiotics and glucose . Same evening his swelling multiply 5times . I went again to vet he puncture with needle and remove the puss . It take 3 days to rinse out . I think this problem is called toxemia . But nw his skin is melting from that area and is detaching what should be done. I m regularly consulting vet but still i need opinion . should i let him lick or bandage it

It sounds like he has a severe skin infection or abscess that is causing septicemia. The skin is dying from the infection. It may take time for the skin to all fully declare itself. Once that happens hopefully the skin can be closed primarily or with a skin flap. But if it can't be maybe amputation of the limb is possible.

I would not let Nanna lick the leg and I do not recommend bandaging it unless that is what your Vet recommends. Bandaging such a severe wound would require daily bandage changes and special bandage material that wouldn't allow the skin to stick to it. I would recommend using an Elizabethan collar (cone) or donut to prevent licking.

    Poor boy! Sounds like a horrible abscess. You should definitely not let him lick it. It should remain bandaged with daily bandage changes until a bed of granulation tissue forms. Your veterinarian can help you to determine when that happens. I like to alternate my bandages with sterile honey, and other dressings to promote granulation. If it is a large area it may need to be debrided under sedation as the tissue dies, and may even require a graft. Even large areas will heal over time by second intention although they may look less than ideal. Also make sure he is on antibiotics until healed. Poor thing!

My dog has a spreading skin infection and is restless. What to do?
Hello. The area is definitely irritated & probably infected. Clean the area with a skin antiseptic, one with either chlorhexidine or benzoyl peroxide as the main ingredient. If Wangu is licking the area, pick up an Elizabethan cone or collar to wear so he cannot reach the spot. Do not administer any medications until your vet has had a chance to examine the area. To help with pain & discomfort, take a bag of frozen vegetables like peas, wrap in a tea towel & hold against the area for 10 minutes several times during the day. The cold will numb the area giving him some relief. Once your vet sees this, I am sure he will start antibiotics & possibly advise other treatments. My dog licked his leg wound; now it's bubbling and fizzing. Help!
Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely infected. I think it would be best to have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check the extent of the wounds and see what would be best to treat them. What you can do in the meantime is use an e-collar in the to prevent further injury. How to treat my dog's smelly, unhealing leg wound at home?
This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). Ideally a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. The area must be clipped more and disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (twice daily). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). My dog's leg lump is ulcerated and he keeps licking it. What to do?
This is large and ulcerated as you said. Since it's on the elbow area that is difficult to bandage. You can put a long sleeve Tee shirt on Foster to keep the area protected from licking. I recommend cleaning it daily with a warm damp cloth and applying a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. Talk to your veterinarian about trying a course of antibiotics. They will reduce any infection which may help it dry up or make it less inflamed. This would be difficult to surgically remove at this point due to its size and location but getting a second opinion from a surgical specialist is what I would do if you want to consider surgical removal. Dog's nail bed cut and swollen from licking. Is a vet visit urgent?
Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the picture! Due to the red fur staining it is evident that Babi is licking the toe. It is also pretty swollen. The first step is to prevent the licking by using an Elizabethan collar (cone) or donut. I do think it would heal faster if you saw a Vet. There is likely a bacterial and or yeast infection of the nail bed. Having oral antibiotics and antifungals and something to stop the desire to lick will speed this process up for you both. I hope this helps and I wish Babi a speedy recovery!

My dog licked her anal abscess raw. When can I remove the e-collar?

The most important aspect of therapy for an anal sac abscess is systemic antibiotics prescribed by a veterinarian, combined with thorough flushing of it. It is very important to keep Nini from licking at it as that will delay healing. If treated appropriately as described above, it usually takes 1-2 weeks to significantly improve and in most cases resolve. The e-collar should stay on until it appears to be completely healed. My dog's severe skin infection won't heal with vet meds; what now?
Oh my. Poor guy. This infection is severe. I would have cultures taken of this skin immediately if the broad spectrum antibiotics that your vet gave aren't working. I would also consider getting biopsies of this thing. The area may need surgical debridement as well, because there is some diseased and necrotic (dead) tissue there that will prevent this from healing well if it isn't removed. I am so sorry your pet has such an aggressive skin condition. This certainly will need further medical management from your vet for sure. With the suggestions above, you should be able to get a better handle on this thing. Best of luck and take care!
