Why is my dog suddenly shrieking in pain and struggling to sit?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | 5 years and 1 month old | 7 lbs

My pet dog was healthy and gay.All of a sudden for the last two days she couldn't barely sit, shrieking every now and then and we aren't able to find any cause for such pain.Can you please help us?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Honey! She is very cute!

Honey sounds very painful. The most common reason for random crying out in pain and trouble sitting is neck or back pain. The dog's also stop jumping up and have trouble doing steps. The most common cause is a muscle strain or sprain or a mineralized disk. I treat neck and back pain with muscle relaxants, pain medications and anti-inflammatories. I recommend having Honey seen by a Vet. They can help figure out where she is painful and prescribe the correct medications. Please do not start human medications as they can interfere with the medications your Vet will want to prescribe.

She could be painful in her neck or back, I would have her examined by your Vet today to get her more comfortable. I treat dogs with neck or back pain with non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and either gabapentin or tramadol. They need to be strictly rested (leash walks, no running/jumping or stairs for several weeks). Purchase a harness so there is no pulling on her neck.

I do not recommend any human OTC medications. Dogs and cats can not metabolize these drugs like we do and there is a narrow margin of safety.

Why is my dog yelping when touched or struggling to get up?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lazy! She does sound very painful! She likely has hurt her back, hips or tail. The fact she cries out when you touch her there and when trying to get up indicates back end pain. Some dogs with anal gland issues or Lyme disease can show similar symptoms. I would have her seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They will very likely on physical exam be able to tell where she hurts. Why is my dog in severe pain, hunching her back, and screaming?

I would be concerned about back pain. Without a complete physical examination it is difficult to say what is causing the pain but with a hunched back it is typically back or belly pain. I would recommend a visit to your veterinarian and they can distinguish where the pain is and if x-rays are need or just medication. My dog is hunched, crying, and in pain after eating. What's wrong?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Callie. Did she have diarrhea when she defecated today? If so, she could be experiencing abdominal pain. If not, then I worry that she has neck and/or back pain as this is common in small breed dogs. This can be excruciating and cause the dog to cry out. Most are hesitant to jump or do stairs. They will stand or walk with a hunched posture. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. She will be examined and the source of her problem located. Based on these results, the veterinarian may recommend testing such as blood work and x-rays. This information will guide treatment. In the meantime, keep her quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Why does my dog squeal or cry in pain when trying to poop?

Thank you for submitting your question Haily. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She could have a sore anal gland due to an infection or impaction. If this is not the case, she could be constipated or even have arthritis in her hips or lower back making it painful to defecate. Her veterinarian will carefully examine her and determine the source of he problem. From there, treatment can be started to make her more comfortable. I hope this information helps!

My dachshund is hunched, crying, and lethargic. Is it neck pain?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Why is my new dog crying, sore, struggling to stand, and has diarrhea?

This sounds like he has bad back or hip pain. He needs veterinary attention right away. They will prescribe pain medication and may do X-rays to determine if he has hip or spinal arthritis. With treatment he should improve if he was fine before. Sometimes back or arthritis pain is worse after a lot of activity, or from being confined and not being able to move around.
