What shampoo is best for my dog's dry, flaky skin & hypothyroidism?

Skin problems are common in dogs with hypothyroidism, and should improve once medication has been started. I would give it about 6-8 weeks for the coat to get back to normal again. It is possible that it may appear to get worse around the 3-4 week mark though, as the old hairs are pushed out for the new coat to grow in. In the meantime, if the only problem is dry skin, try to bathe no more than once a month, and use a conditioner afterwards. Omega 3 (fish oil) supplements can also help to combat dryness. It looks as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy, a skin mite (Demodex) or fleas. 

The allergy could be a due to a protein in your dog’s food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc. 

The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. This then leads to infection. Skin infections are typically characterized by large areas of hair loss, redness, crusting, flaking, and pustules. A thorough skin examination by your veterinarian should be able to determine the cause of the infection and itch so it can be treated appropriately. Because your puppy is so young I would be very concerned about Demodex as the primary problem. Your dog will most likely need antibiotics to help clear up the infection and possibly an allergy/anti-itch medication like Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint to give some relief while the infection clears up. A medicated shampoo may be beneficial as well (based on the type of infection your veterinarian can recommend the most appropriate one). I would also recommend that he be on a good flea control routinely too. The thyroid gland is located in the throat area but it is probably not what you were feeling. I suspect you may be feeling a large lymph node or just severely inflamed skin tissue judging by the severity of his infection. I hope this helps. Use a pet shampoo that is oatmeal based. if you can find the accompanying conditioner, this would help as well. also, start Coco on an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this will help improve the skin's health. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Head and Shoulder is OK but not the best product for this issue. Dandruff is called seborrhea and I would use a dog shampoo made specifically for this issue like this one. Poor guy. You did the right thing by shaving it. But now it looks like he is in need of antibiotics because this is a skin infection, hence the yellow crusting seen there. You will need to take him in to your local vet for a quick skin test to rule out mites and a thyroid test may be applicable as well, depending on his estimated age and physical exam findings. The vet will likely get him started on oral antibiotics to hopefully clear up this skin infection. Also Duoxo shampoo seborrhea may help clear up some of these infected areas. My favorite brand is Duoxo. It comes in a shampoo that has chlorhexidine and climbazole that treats bacterial and fungal problems. However, if you are unable to find this or something similar at a pet store then any drug store is likely to have a chlorhexidine OR salicylic acid shampoo in their human shampoo section.
