Sentinel for dogs: When do allergic reactions or side effects begin?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I prescribe Nexgard and Sentinel together multiple times per day. I haven’t heard of any reactions. Just like people some dogs can react to certain medications. If you google any medication for human or animals you will find stories of adverse reactions. No drug doesn’t come without side effects. To be safe give the drugs 2 days apart the first time you give them. I have some clients that give one the 1st of the month and the other mid month. Personally I haven’t heard of any reactions going the 2 together. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

Hello, sorry to hear about Hillary. Reports of side effects and adverse reactions with this medication are very rare and are associated with GI signs such as (vomiting, a decreased appetited, and nausea). Hillary should be able to tolerate this double dose, however if you note any of these signs persisting over 3-5 days, then have your veterinarian evaluate Hillary. You may resume her normal dosage next month. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It should start killing worms within 24 hours. Penny will need another dose of it in two weeks to kill all the worms. This is due to the life cycle of worms. There will be eggs that will not have hatched yet at the time of the first deworming, so another needs to be given in two weeks to kill those when they do hatch. I hope this helps!

Side effects are generally very rare in heartworm preventative medications, but are certainly possible. Some herding breed dogs (such as Blue Heelers and Australian Cattle dogs) will be sensitive to ivermectin (the active ingredient in Heartgard), so I would discuss your other heartworm preventative options with your veterinarian. I would contact your veterinarian for specific advice for Kera, but I can give you the following information. The two ingredients in Sentinel are very safe and there is a moderate dosage range. You don't mention Kiera's weight, but depending on her weight, repeating Sentinel may still be within her dosage range even if you gave the Sentinel on the 28th. I would also ask your veterinarinan about when you purchased the Sentinel since that may help you determine (with the number of tablets you have left) if you gave her one last month or not. Finally, it is generally recommended to repeat heartworm medication if you are not sure you gave it since heartworms and intestinal parasites can cause significant disease. I hope that was helpful. Hi there. No, this should not cause any problems. These two medications do not have any harmful interactions, and Sentinel has a very wide margin of safety so accidentally giving the next size up for your dog's weight would not be expected to cause any issues.

Hi there. Most heartworm preventatives, including milbemycin oxime (Sentinel), do not work by staying in the dog's body the entire month. Instead, they are active for a few days, and kill any heartworm larvae and/or intestinal parasites that are present at that time. As long as you give the product monthly, it will prevent heartworm disease from developing because any larvae that the dog is exposed to will never have a chance to develop beyond one month of age. For intestinal parasites, you can think of it as doing a routine deworming once monthly. Revolution (selamectin) and Advantage Multi (moxidectin) are the exceptions to this rule. They do stay active in the body for the entire month, and kill larvae continuously as the pet becomes exposed. However, in practice this difference really doesn't matter one way or the other - all of these products are effective at preventing heartworm disease and keeping dogs from picking up intestinal parasite infestations.
