My dog has seizures. Can spaying help reduce their frequency?

You should really have her spayed at the clinic where Gracie's medical history is known. That said, it is important that the vet who does the spay knows about her epilepsy, since it might influence which anesthesia the vet will use. We have many different ways of anesthetizing dogs, so there is a way to individualize the procedure according to need. I would insist on having a talk with the surgeon.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. At 10yrs old, Brian's is not too old to have this procedure done. Many of the drugs used for surgery help control seizures. In older dogs I like using Midazolam as the pre-anesthetic drug combined with atropine to help keep the heart rate at a good rate and then inducing with protocol which also controls seizures. As long as your vet knows she has seizures he or she will make the most appropriate decision for anesthetic drugs. I hope this helps! I am sorry that Gracie has been having these seizures. I would recommend taking her to a vet for blood work to make sure the seizures are not related to underlying disease like liver disease. However seizures are often caused by stress and going into heat can cause stress. Having her spayed will help with her over all health. Food or diet should not play a role or affect her seizures unless she has a liver/or liver shunt issue which is possible but much less likely in cats than other animals. Hope that helps! Not all sheepdogs will develop seizures. Seizures have multiple causes and it is important to determine the cause in order to more effectively control them. Consider a second opinion with a different vetrerinarian or veterinary neurologist. There are several medications used in veterinary medicine to control seizure activity. You should also start a Seizure Log. Record such information as time of day, length of seizure, diet and activity before and after. This may help your veterinarian in pinpointing a cause or trigger.

Hello, Pregnancy is more dangerous in animals that suffer from chronic conditions, such as epilepsy. Epilepsy can also be genetically passed on to her pups. I would recommend a spay if at all possible. Keeping her as calm as possible and minimizing stress is the best thing you can do for her. I hope this is helpful. It is a possibility that can keep having them or may never have another . Some dogs have seizures as a result of a stressful event, so it may never happen at home! Keep a log of when they have them, how long it lasted, what they were doing before it happened and how long until they were back to normal. if they continue or seem to getting worse, your vet can do blood work and see about medications to prevent them.

I am sorry to hear about your kitty! We do routinely do surgery in many pets that have seizures, and as long as we are aware ahead of time we can prepare for this concern by doing things such as selecting certain drugs for anesthesia and having an IV catheter in place in case a seizure occurs so we have quick access to a vein to administer medication. I would say that the risk of not being spayed is a greater health risk than the risk of being spayed. I would, however, recommend having your cat examined/have work-up done which may involve bloodwork and ultrasound to ensure there isn't a cause for seizures such as a liver shunt that needs to be addressed if your cat hasn't already been examined for the seizures. I would also recommend you have your cat spayed at a full service vet clinic and not a spay/neuter low cost clinic because of her issues she is going to need more intensive monitoring than they can offer. The risks involved in spaying are the same for any surgical procedure and include adverse reaction to the anesthetic drugs, bleeding during surgery, and infection of the surgical site. These complications are extremely rare.
