My bulldog had a seizure and high fever. Is it epilepsy or stress?

It is unlikely that the episode in the car caused epilepsy. If your dog is fairly young then this could be idiopathic epilepsy, and those seizures could be a one-time event. If she is an old dog then seizures can be caused by a brain tumor. This will need to be examined by a veterinarian. If the seizures happen often , then medication such as KBr and phenobarbital can be given to suppress seizures. Keep a diary of when she has a seizure, write down the time of start and end, and the circumstances as well as the date. If the seizure lasts longer than 4-5 minutes, it is an emergency and she needs to be seen by a vet right away.

I always recommend blood work to start with in any dog that started having seizures. There are a few things that could be diagnosed on blood work that could cause seizures, such as liver disease, kidney disease, electrolyte abnormalities, and infection. If the blood work is normal. Your vet will likely recommend that you continue to monitor Harley for seizure activity. Some dogs will have a seizure or two early in their life and never again. But some develop epilepsy that needs to start on medications. There is no medicine over the counter that can help and there is a condition in Bulldogs that causes this for an unknown reason. it is best to keep track of how long each episode last and how intense and what she is doing before it starts so your vet can get a better idea of what is going on.

I am sorry to hear about Chewie. The storms and fireworks can definitely cause extreme anxiety in some pets. I would recommend discussing with your vet if there is a prescription medication they feel is appropriate for him knowing his medical history to see if this helps if the storms are still ongoing. You can also try an Adaptil collar (a calming pheremone product), a Thundershirt (compression vest for anxiety) and a calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure, all available online or sometimes at pet stores or vet offices. Seizures have many causes and without knowing more, this question is very difficult to answer. Idiopathic or unknown causes of seizures often called epilepsy, is treatable in many cases. The goal of treatment is to reduce the frequency of the seizures. Other causes include infection, internal organ disease, heart disease, toxin exposure, among others. It's important to screen dogs who are having seizures for a cause. This is often done with detailed history taking and a physical examination. Then a minimum database is performed which could include fecal/blood/urine tests and maybe some x-rays. Once a problem is identified, it can be addressed but most seizure cases end up being epilepsy. 2 seizures one month apart are frequent enough to start anti-convulsant drug treatment. You should also ask your veterinarian about using MCT Oil (from coconuts). This has been found to help some dogs with their seizures. One concern with this oil though is stressing the pancreas and causing pancreatitis, so caution must be used. Good luck
