Dog scratching badly, no fleas. Could it be allergies or something else?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

Herc is a pit/boxer mix. He’s been scratching pretty badly lately and since he’s spent more time outside I figured he got into some fleas, but I haven’t seen any on him or any of my other dogs and don’t want to give him unnecessary medicine if he doesn’t need it. Any ideas?

I'm sorry to hear about Herc! He could have gotten fleas or it could be allergies. Or it can be allergies to the fleas! Seasonal allergies can develop at any age so even if he's never had allergies, it's still possible. Take Hercules in to your vet and he or she can help narrow it down and get started on the right course of treatment. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Herc!
