Why is my dog scratching his neck raw with bleeding sores?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 68 lbs

Ulcers with drainages, on the back of the neck, itchy, clear liquids mixed with blood from scratching.

The lesions that you are seeing on the back of Bruce's neck could be a result of a skin infection from his excessive scratching (possibly related to allergies to fleas, food or environmental factors), but could also be associated with ringworm, mange or benign or malignant cancerous processes. Bruce should go to his vet for evaluation because he likely needs a course of antibiotics to treat any infection present. Until you can get to the vet, keep an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further scratching and skin damage. Also be sure that he is receiving a high quality flea preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto or K9 Advantix II) regularly. Baths in an antibacterial shampoo (here is one example: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=27982) may be beneficial until his vet appointment. I hope that all goes well!

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Bruce.

The photos you’ve attached are very helpful. The wound looks like it has a white pus like discharge, suggesting that it could be infected. I would recommend having Bruce evaluated by a veterinarian today so that the wound can be cleaned out thoroughly and closed. The veterinarian can also prescribe a course of antibiotics.

The most common reasons for red skin and abnormal lesions is allergies. Allergies can be secondary to parasites, food or even environment. I would recommend applying flea prevention every 30 days. Also you can try an over the counter anti histamine and medicated shampoo to decrease the inflammation of the skin and help stop the itchy skin. However if it is not improving I would recommend taking Bruce to a vet for a good exam. It is possible Bruce has skin mites but the proper mediations can only be prescribed by your vet. My dog's neck is raw from scratching. What can I do until the vet?

Poor Cooper! It sounds like you're already on the right track for ruling out issues, however, environmental allergens can also flare up this time of year which may be causing the excessive itchiness. Since that area is very badly irritated and inflamed, I definitely agree with getting into your vet ASAP. Since it's right on his neck, you can try inverting an Elizabethan (cone) collar so that the cone part covers the irritation and the neck park sits up closer around his ears, so that it doesn't rub against the irritated spot and protects it from further scratching. Keeping the area clean and dry can also help reduce any secondary infections that may take hold in the irritated skin. An over the counter allergy medication such as Benadryl can also help by reducing any irritation/itchiness, and may also have the added benefit of making him a little drowsy so he's less likely to scratch. However, getting into the vet like you planned is the best course of action. If there is a big wound opening up, it gets worse, it oozes debris, or Cooper seems in major distress, getting into your vet sooner or reaching out to an urgent care vet may be a good idea.

Ouch, poor Bobby's skin looks so irritated! If you are sure he doesn't have fleas, then other causes of this incessant bleeding include allergies, mites, or ringworm. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what is causing this itching, but he should see a vet for it in the morning. The vet can diagnose the cause of his itching so he can be treated. I would also be concerned he has a secondary bacterial infection due to the trauma to his skin, and that needs to be treated as well by the vet.

It looks like what we call a hot spot or moist dermatitis. These looks really painful. I would have him seen. He will most likely need some antibiotics and some topical medication to help dry this up. They can also give you something for the itching or pain relief. These usually heal pretty quickly once they stop messing with them.

Why does my dog have bleeding bumps on his back but isn't scratching?

This sounds quite uncomfortable for Sly! He could be experiencing a skin infection from underlying allergies, ringworm or mange causing these issues. I'm glad to hear that he is on Advantage Multi because this makes a flea allergy seem less likely. However, many dogs are allergic to their foods or a host of environmental factors. At this point, your best bet is to take him to the vet. The vet may need to perform fungal cultures (to rule out ringworm), skin scrapings (to rule out the mites causing mange), or skin cytology (to determine if bacteria is present in these lesions). From there, the vet will be able to prescribe medications (i.e. antibiotics, antifungals, anti-itch, etc.) to try to help Sly. Bathing him every other day could dry out his coat and remove normally present oils, which can make matters worse. I only recommend bathing this frequently when using certain prescription-based medicated shampoos. Under normal circumstances, try not to bathe him more than every 2-3 weeks. You can use a damp cloth to wipe Sly down each time he comes inside to try to remove any pollens clinging to his coat. I hope that all goes well!

My dog's neck is raw from collar. What safe remedy can I use?

If you think the lesion was caused by the collar rubbing, you can put some neosporin on it. The most important thing is to keep her from scratching. You may have to put a t-shirt or similar around her neck , so she cannot directly scratch the lesion. If the itching does not stop within 2 days or if the lesion starts to expand or ooze, you will need to stop the neosporin and take her to a veterinarian for an exam, as it may have been infected by bacteria. This could also be a fungus, in which case the neosporin will not work, If possible, wash her collar before putting it back on
