My dog is scratching her mouth with a pink spot. Should I see a vet?

If you have not already, I would get Harper seen by your vet as an infection would require oral antibiotics. Sometimes skin parasites can also affect this area. Your vet can perform the necessary Diagnostics to determine what the primary cause is and to put Harper on the most appropriate treatment. Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes a dog may scratch around the mouth due to food allergies, environmental allergies or even autoimmune issues. If the area is red and irritated you may apply a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment but Nobby is likely to just lick it off. She is at the age where food allergies may develop so you may wish to try a novel protein diet (generally will need a prescription diet to do this). If the itch continues I would suggest scheduling an examination with your veterinarian as oral antibiotics or other medications like corticosteroids or antihistamines may be needed.

My suspicion is that this is a local reaction to an insect bite or sting. Other trauma might include something that poked into the skin and cause irritation. I would clean the are with diluted Betadine in sterile saline (a light brown mixture should result) and monitor. If it is worsening I would have a vet examine this. You can also give adult benadryl. Any topical product you apply will promptly be licked off. This could be localized infection or inflammation. An allergic reaction or mass cannot be ruled out by image alone. Legally, we are prohibited from telling to medicate the spot in the absence of a physical exam. Ideally, Lana should be physically examined by your veterinarian for a firm diagnosis. She may need systemic treatment as opposed to topical. In the meantime, place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent pawing or rubbing. Keep the area as clean and dry as possible. Wipe her mouth after she drinks or eats.

His (you listed Sadie as a male, so I will refer to Sadie as him) behavior that you are describing is letting you know that this area is very irritating and uncomfortable to him. Possible reasons for the redness and irritation on his lip area, particularly in his breed mix type are: infection of the lip fold area and/or autoimmune disorder/disease. There may be other areas on Sadie's body that have a similar appearance as well. Sadie should be seen by his veterinarian as soon as you can get him in for an appointment so your vet can closely examine this area, the rest of the mouth and look at other areas on his body to help with a diagnosis. Then, Sadie can be placed on medication right away that will make him feel better and help clear up this area for him. Best of luck with Sadie.

Poor Momo! He could have a sore tooth in the back of his mouth causing him to scratch at it, he could have a skin infection of the side of the mouth called a lip fold pyoderma, it could be caused by allergies, or he could have a foreign body stuck in his mouth. I recommend taking Momo into your vet to have his mouth examined, have the cause of the scratching diagnosed, and you vet can determine the appropriate treatment.

Hi there. It looks like your dog either has an abrasion or infection causing the pink area on her face. Dogs can get blocked hair follicles that create this appearance, or she may have scraped it on something. If she'll tolerate vitamin E oil rubbed on it, this can help.
