Dog scratching mouth after dental surgery: are stitches too long?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

My dog had a lot of her teeth extracted on the 25th. She had been eating and drinking water like normal. But I was wondering if maybe one of her stitches are too long or too big because she will have random small freak outside and start scratching at her mouth. I cant leave her alone for even a minute just in case she scratches and makes herself bleed.

Her gum is healing well. I would recommend calling your veterinarian and seeing if they are able to pull the stitch out. If they cannot it typically dissolves rather quickly. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
