Why is my dog scratching, licking paws, whimpering after grooming?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 17 days old | 50 lbs

My dog has been scratching his ears/face excessively, and occasionally whimpers at random. I also saw him licking his paws for a moment today. I noticed a little of this for a few days, but it seemed to have gotten worse after his visit to the groomers yesterday (may or may not be related). What might be the issue?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I suspect Louls developed allergic reaction that makes his skin very itchy. Scratching the ears suggests ear canal infection, that is often a part of allergic skin problems.
A visit to the groomers could definitely make things worse as Louls may be allergic to one of the products your groomer used on him.
You should take Louls to your local vets to confirm the diagnosis and to get treatment for him. It will likely be a course of anti-inflamatory medications.
