Why is my dog scooting, licking his anus, and having diarrhea?

Either is possible - diarrhea can cause irritation and 'itchiness' of the anus and perianal area. Baxter's anal glands could also be full since they are normally emptied during defecation and his stool probably hasn't been bulky enough to express them. If his anal area looks irritated you could apply a thin layer of Vitamin A+D ointment or Petroleum jelly to the area, but if he keeps scooting I'd recommend taking him in to have his glands checked.

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. You could consider using A D ointment to put on the area around the anus in case it is irritated. You may find that at your local pharmacy. I recommend that you have Riley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Have him seen by your veterinarian. The most common, and easiest to treat, cause is full or impacted anal glands. Normally, the anal glands are emptied during the act of defecation. In some dogs, this doesn't happen and the glands fill up, become impacted and could abscess. This would result in the symptoms described. Your veterinarian can Express the glands manually, flush them and instill medication if necessary. Antibiotics and pain medications are also sometimes dispensed. If Scooby is licking back there, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the doctor.

I recommend offering a bland diet such as boiled chicken and rice (in a ratio of 1 part meat to 2 parts rice) for the next few days to help bulk up his stool. You can also try mixing in 1/8 of a teaspoon of Metamucil into his food twice daily. This is a fiber supplement that can be purchased from a human pharmacy (purchase the original, unflavored kind). If his diarrhea persists for longer than a couple days, or if you ever see blood in the diarrhea, I recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian, as there could be a more serious underlying cause. Common causes of diarrhea include intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, infection, and in older dogs, cancer. The scooting may be due to irritation from the diarrhea, or due to full anal glands. Your veterinarian will be able to perform a physical and rectal examination and express his anal glands, if needed. I hope this is helpful!

See if there is fur and poop matted there and see if the skin is red and inflammed. If there is matted fur wash him. If he isn't matted or the skin is red I recommend he see your Vet today. They can address the skin and check to see if his anal glands need to be emptied. Full or impacted anal glands can cause scooting. Causesof diarrhea in puppies: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, food sensitivity or toxin ingestion. Bring a stool sample to your appointment. After the exam they may prescribe an antibiotic and/or a probiotic. If his skin is irriated they may prescribe a topical to apply. I hope this helps. It sounds like your dog has a severe case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon. Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease and viruses. Brownie is probably licking around his anus because of the pain and inflammation associated with diarrhea or he may have an issue with his anal glands. I would recommend taking him in to the vet to be examined. He may need fluids to correct any dehydration that can occur because of fluid loss, a fecal examination performed, have his anal glands checked and antibiotics and/or probiotics to help the diarrhea clear up.
