What's this scabby, growing lump on my dog's side? Is it a wart?

Thanks for sending the picture! It appears to be a wart like growth with a small scab on top. These are common in small breed dogs. If it grows or changes rapidly, then I would still have her veterinarian check it out. Otherwise I do not suspect it will be a problem for her. You can try to clean the scab off for her. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since Odie is young, it is likely a benign growth called a histiocytoma. Histiocytomas are pink hairless, button like growths commonly found on the limbs of young dogs. They spontaneously regress on their own in 2-3 months. They tend to ulcerate before they regress. If the growth increases in size rapidly or Odie keeps traumatizing it or it doesn't resolve in a reasonable time frame consider surgical removal and biopsy. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Dogs can develop different types of skin growths/masses. This mass could be an adenoma or benign wart like skin growth, a true papilloma wart, or another type of growth. Your veterinarian might be able to tell what the mass is just by looking at it and/or feeling it, or might recommend taking a sample of cells using a needle and examining it under the microscope. If the mass is bleeding I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian sooner rather than later.

A histiocytoma is common on the extremities of a young dog. This is a spontaneous growth usually goes away on its own. Without seeing it in person it is hard to know for sure what the growth is. It is not likely a wart. Warts are caused by viruses and often seen in the mouth of dogs. This may very well be a benign skin tag/growth, but with any lump an evaluation by your veterinarian at your earliest convenience is recommended. They may take a small needle sample and look at the cells under the microscope to get more info and make sure it is nothing to worry about. They can also discuss options for removal if it is growing or if it is bothering pogi.

Thanks for sending in the pictures of Oliver. It is a little difficult for me to make out the pictures, but it appears like he has a small skin growth on his head that has scabbed over. I would gently clean the scab and dried blood away with a warm wash cloth. If there is a flesh colored growth it may be a wart like mass. They are common in many dogs as they age. If he has been scratching at his head, then it could be self trauma secondary to his allergies. If it bothers him or does not resolve, then have your veterinarian evaluate him.
