Can my power chewer puppy safely chew a smoked bison knuckle bone?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 months and 22 days old | 91 lbs

I have a 6 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback 45 lb puppy . Can I give him a raw but smoked bison knuckle bone to chew attended? He is a power+ chewer.

Ranger is a handsome boy. I know it can be hard to find approriate chew toys for these guys but I would recommend against the knuckle. If he is able to break off any pieces they could cause havoc to his GI tract, sometimes resulting in surgery. The other problem is large bones like this are likely to cause teeth fractures which can be painful problems and expensive to fix at a veterinary dentist.

I would not recommend that as the bone can splinter and cause issues along Ranger's intestinal tract. A better choice could be a heavy duty kong, everlasting treat ball, or even a commercial grade nylabone. Some pet stores sell antlers which if long and thick enough may be ok for him.

Ranger is so cute! I do not recommend dogs chew on bones, smoked or otherwise, as I have seen them cause cracked/broken teeth as well as intestinal upset if ingested. Bones can even cause an intestinal obstruction if ingested and require surgery. I usually recommend using a kong toy for powerful chewers as it has some give to it when the dog bites and chews on it and is unlikely to break teeth.

You are correct that antlers and nylon bones will break teeth, but they can also cause obstructions and/or perforations in the GI tract. I recommend a Kong toy. Those are very tough chew toys that are hard to dogs to destroy. You can also fill them with treats. I'd recommend, as an occasional treat, filling it with peanut butter and freezing it overnight in the freezer. That will keep her occupied for a while.

My dog eats ham bones. Is it safe for him to eat the entire bone?

As with any bone or hard chew toy, there are concerns for tooth trauma. In my experience, I've seen many broken teeth from dogs chewing on deer antlers, hard bones, etc. I would usually recommend against giving these for that reason. As Rocky is a larger breed dog, the pieces of bone that he is chewing off of the main bone should not be a problem and they should pass through his intestines just fine. However, if given a large enough bone and he eats it whole, this could lead to a GI foreign body obstruction as the bone tries to pass through and gets stuck. There are alternatives you can use such as Kong toys that you can put treats in or put peanut butter in that would keep him busy. Hopefully this helps! Can my dog safely chew raw beef marrow bones for mental stimulation?

No it won't crack any teeth (or at least it is very unlikely to do so), but I would suggest not to give any bone at all (neither cooked or raw) to avoid any risk of secondary gastrointestinal complications. Is it safe for my puppy to chew bones, and what type is recommended?

I personally never recommend giving dogs bones. They too often break teeth, and can and do lead to obstructions in the GI tract. Now there are rubber bones that Stormy can chew on, and you can give her one designed specifically for puppies. They are a bit softer and will help her when she starts teething in a couple of months. The Kong brand has a great range of puppy rubber bones, and I would get her one of those from a pet store. Just make sure to watch her when she chews on it to make sure she doesn't bite off and swallow any parts. Best of luck!

My puppy has hooves to chew. Are they safe or will they break teeth?

I myself, am not a fan. I do see these often cause teeth to break in dogs/puppies. I would advise not to give this to your pet. It is better to get easily digestible dog dental chews (once he is a bit bigger >10 months old) or you can get kong toys that are a bit safer for him to chew on. Are Nylabones safe for dogs to chew, or can they damage teeth?

The nylabone is generally safe to play with and is difficult to chew, so the little bits that could get ingested are not toxic or enough to cause problems. If a bigger piece was somehow ingested, then this would be a problem. Veterinary dentists warn that nylabones are too hard and can lead to tooth fractures, so it's not commonly recommended anymore. The recommendation is to not get chews that are hard enough that they would hurt if you were hit in the kneecap with it. Kongs are usually a safe choice.
