Ruptured anal gland in dog: healing time, cone, and snow safety?

It usually takes about a week for an anal gland rupture to heal, but that assumes that the dog is on appropriate antibiotics and that the infection inside is clearing. If you're only seeing clear fluid and not pus, it sounds like the infection is getting better. You can apply warm compresses to the ruptured gland (wet a cloth and microwave it for 45 seconds or so until it's warm but not hot) for 5 minutes 3 times daily. It's actually not a bad thing that the hole doesn't close up too quickly, because it give the normal duct a chance to return to normal (the swelling to decrease) yet the gland will continue to drain.

Yes, this is normal. She is likely painful. You can request pain medication for her from your veterinarian if none was dispensed. Keep the e-collar in place until she heals. Excessive licking will delay healing and may introduce more infection.

It can take 3 weeks or longer to completely heal from this surgery. The itching is likely due to the sutures and healing. Keep an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking or chewing. Your vet may be able to prescribe a remedy for the itching.

The most important aspect of therapy for an anal sac abscess is systemic antibiotics prescribed by a veterinarian, combined with thorough flushing of it. It is very important to keep Nini from licking at it as that will delay healing. If treated appropriately as described above, it usually takes 1-2 weeks to significantly improve and in most cases resolve. The e-collar should stay on until it appears to be completely healed. I do recommend bringing him to a vet for a recheck and expression of the anal glands and a reflushing if the anal glands with dilute chlorhexidine solution if they appear to still be oozy. It is unusual, if the anal gland were expressed the first time, for there to be a second fistula within 2 weeks. I also recommend placing an e-collar for a week while Barney is on antibiotics and pain meds as well as a topical prescription steroid/antibiotic/antifungal ointment such as dermavet/quadritops etc. that often speeds up healing of the fistula. With topical as well as oral antibiotics on emptied/flushed anal glands, fistula usually heal within a week. Good luck!

Hello. Most anal gland infections heal up quite nicely with medications & keeping the area clean. Unless there is a special circumstance involving Tia's glands, such as the area is just not healing, additional flushing & treatment is usually not necessary. Don't panic! Yes this will heal on its own. What I recommend you do is make a warm epsom salt solution and soak her little bum in the solution several times daily until the swelling goes down. She is small enough that you could put a 1/4 c of epsom salt in a kitchen sink-sized basin and have her sit in this until the water cools. This does a great job of healing the hole and drawing out the infection and swelling.
