My puppy runs and coughs while eating. How to get him to eat calmly?

Oli may be eating to fast. You can try purchasing a puzzle feeder dish (they are available on Amazon.com) with ridges in it that slow down eating and drinking if used as food and water bowls. If this doesn’t resolve the coughing/gagging, and he coughs/gags with canned puppy food as well, it is possible that he may have a condition called megaesophagus where the food doesn’t move down his esophagus normally. Your vet can take X-rays of his neck/chest to diagnose this if slowing down his eating/feeding him small amounts at a time or trying canned food as well does not help. Good luck! It could be that Rowan is eating too quickly, and that is causing him to cough after he eats. You can take a muffin tin, and divide his food up equally into the tins. That will force him to slow down eating. You can also get a slow feeder. If these things don't help with the coughing, then he could have a problem with esophagus, such as megaesophagus, and I would have him seen by a vet. As for the loose poop, diarrhea in puppies is commonly caused by intestinal parasites. I would give Rowan a deworming treatment if he hasn't had one recently. You can give him Panacur. He will need one every two weeks until he is 12 weeks old. Then one every month until he is six months of age, and after that he should be dewormed once every three months.

Hiccups are very normal in puppies, so I wouldn't be concerned about this :) If you think he is eating too fast, you can try putting his food in a puzzle toy like a Kong or a Kibble Nibble so that he has to eat more slowly - this is also a great way to keep puppies busy and give them something fun to do. Puppy training should be very positive with lots of rewards and short training sessions - Yogi is just a baby, so his attention span is going to be very short at this age. Use treats to show him what you want him to do, then praise and reward when he gets it right. Puppy proof your home to keep things out of his reach that he shouldn't have, and make sure he has lots of appropriate items to chew on - things like bully sticks, cow or pig ears, or rawhide chews are great for this. Puppies don't understand the concept of "doing wrong" - they only know that you're angry, and they act scared and submissive because they're frightened. So focus on showing him what you want him to do, and prevent him from making mistakes by managing the environment. What a cutie! How much to feed is going to depend on the food you are feeding. Every food is going to have a different calorie amount per cup. All foods should have a chart on the package (or you can look it up on the product website) with guidelines for how much to feed based on your puppy's size. A high quality puppy food is recommended. Purina pro plan for puppies is my favorite. Start with the guideline and then watch your puppy- if they start to look a little thin or fat you may need to slightly increase or decrease amount, and you will need to increase as they get larger. As far as the cough, if it is rare, like once a day or less, I wouldn't be concerned. If it is happening multiple times a day or lasts longer than a few small coughs a vet exam is recommended.

Some puppies can make noises while they eat, which can be normal, and if Bojangles is eating too quickly he could be choking a little which is causing the gag. Trying to get him to slow down in his eating and drinking with a slow-down bowl (or placing a few tennis balls in the bowl) or feeding smaller meals more frequently may help. If he is choking a lot, acting like he can't breathe or is painful, is vomiting or can't keep anything down, or seems in distress from it, a vet visit to rule out anything is always best.

Thank you for your questions about Bindi. Some older dogs can develop a gagging/coughing after eating or drinking possibly due to fibrosing of the soft tissue but I'm not sure that an exact cause is identified. Since there can be many causes of coughing and gagging in general, having Bindi examined by her veterinarian will just make sure that everything sounds and feels normal. I do not suspect the gulping of the food causes the coughing. The weight can contribute to breathing difficulty (as well as other health issues) but I wouldn't pin all the signs on just her excess weight. Certainly getting her weight to a healthy level is better for her in general. There are special bowls you can find that have large, tower like objects build into the bowl that force the pet to eat around them and slows things down. Dog food that has a doughnut shaped kibble can also slow down eating. Try a special bowl in combo with the special shaped kibble. I hope this helps to lead you in the right direction.
