My dog has a runny nose, mucus, and is hacking. What's wrong?

I'm sorry to hear that Rocco isn't feeling well. From your description it sounds like he may have an upper respiratory infection. Given the nasal discharge and increased effort while breathing, I would recommend that you have him seen by a veterinarian. They will perform physical examination and may recommend blood work to ensure there is nothing more serious going on. Some upper respiratory infections are viral in nature and will resolve with time;however, in some cases antibiotics are needed if there is a bacterial component to the infection.

This may be due to an upper respiratory infection that could be now affecting the lower respiratory system as well such as kennel cough. It is very important that you have Teddy evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to gather more information and proceed with an exam to determine what would be best at this point. They are likely going to consider prescribing antibiotics. Poor guy. Upper respiratory infections in dogs are usually caused by a bacterial infection. Other possible causes are a fungal infection, or allergies. It's best to take him to the vet to get examined and medications to treat this. If he does have an upper respiratory infection then he will be prescribed oral antibiotics to take care of it. Poor Roxy! I can definitely see the dry discharge from both nostrils. You’re right in saying that this can be caused by an upper respiratory infection. In most cases these infections cannot be transmitted to people or from people to dogs. These are very common in dogs, and can easily be treated with antibiotics prescribed by a veterinarian. Unfortunately, nasal discharge can be caused by several other diseases such as a nasal foreign body or mass, or even pneumonia. Your vet can do some blood work and x-rays to determine the exact cause of Roxy’s nasal discharge. You should have her seen immediately if she begins acting lethargic, loses her appetite, or you believe she’s having trouble breathing.

This sounds like she has a mild cold or upper respiratory infection. Generally these are viral colds and will run their course over a week or so. Just like with us no antibiotics are needed unless she develops a secondary bacterial infection. If the discharge becomes green and her condition worsens then please bring her right in for treatment. This is usually treated with antibiotics. I recommend that you have your pup evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Coughing, sneezing, along with mucous sounds suspicious of a upper respiratory infection. I would recommend Bubba be seen by his veterinarian as soon as possible. Your veterinarian will do an exam and may recommend x-rays to better evaluate the infection and help determine the cause. Bubba may need to be placed on antibiotics or other medications as needed to help clear the infection. I hope this helps!
