Ideally, he should be examined by your veterinarian then have a complete dental cleaning. Dental x-rays should be done to have a look below the gum line. Hello, It does appear that Chhutki has tartar and plaque accumulation on her teeth. It's unfortunate she cannot have an anesthetic dental cleaning due to her heart disease. I do not know of parabens causing any health problems in dogs. I believe its best to use the dentagel oil as your vet prescribed. I think this will be the most effective possible treatment in her case. Unfortunately, there is no natural remedy to dental disease. The smell is from the tartar and bacterial growth in the mouth. I’m sorry to hear about the tooth loss. It sounds like you are trying hard to maintain good oral health and you should continue this. Definitely try to brush the teeth every day, even twice a day if possible. Pet tooth paste helps but the main benefit is the physical brushing. They also make dental diets which can improve oral health. Some pets also go on pulse therapy antibiotics to help control bacterial populations in the mouth. Unfortunately despite best efforts, dental disease can progress resulting in a he tooth loss. A fair amount of dental disease is found under the gumline and so it is hard to address without a proper dental cleaning. You may ask your veterinarian if there is an option to have you pup cared for by a specialist who may be able to preform a dental cleaning. If this is an option. This is very sad, The teeth need to be removed by a vet. There are no over the counter pain medications we can recommend. Those medications are not very safe. If the dog is in that much pain it needs to see a vet. Even if your friend cannot afford the dental cleaning, usually pain medications are not that expensive. I, personally, would be more worried about the infection that is present in the mouth than the pain.

Leela needs her teeth professionally cleaned by a vet. It appears as though she has at least Grade 3 periodontal disease. Thirteen years old for a small breed dog is not old. Your vet will do some blood testing before the procedure to make sure her organs can process the anesthesia appropriately. The anesthetics used in animals are just like the ones used for people - they are very safe. If you are worried about the anesthetic procedure I suggest you discuss your concerns with your vet so they can walk you through the procedure. Nothing you can do at home will help these teeth. Dog can lose their teeth but the biggest danger is that they face a higher risk for other diseases because the bacteria that are responsible for dental disease can enter the bloodstream and infect the heart, kidneys and/or other organs. Tartar buildup on a dog’s teeth is very common. The best way to prevent it is by brushing their teeth daily, usually in the evenings after their last meal. In most cases, unless the pulp cavity (the inner, live part of the tooth) or the crown (the whitish part of the tooth you can see) is damaged there is no need to remove the tooth. With a good dental cleaning (that must be done under general anesthesia) the tartar can be removed and the tooth polished so that the tooth can remain with the dog. If you are going to have a dental performed on your dog ask the veterinarian about performing dental x-rays. This will help determine the viability of the tooth. Once the x-rays are performed the veterinarian can make a better decision on whether or not the tooth needs to be removed. If tartar on the tooth is the only issue, there is no discoloration, cracks or fractures, or anything abnormal about the tooth, your dog will likely be able to keep the tooth.
