Dog ripped off a tick after 8 months. What are the health risks?

We just found a tick on my dog. We thought it was just a bump. It's probably been there for about 8 months. He ripped it off today what should we do!??

Wow, that was an extraordinarily long stay on your dog. It's not uncommon for them to stay a couple of months, but 8 months is a long time for a tick to feed.

I'm assuming that you have positively identified the bump as a tick, so I'll give my thoughts about this.

First, don't worry. Ticks are a normal part of life for a dog and usually do not cause much of a problem. They can transmit a few different blood diseases though. There are a few different species of ticks that get on dogs and the potential for transmitting different diseases depends on the type of tick.

If King had that tick there for 8 months and has been otherwise healthy, then the chance of him getting one of those diseases is rather low at this time. However, if he has been abnormally sleepy, sluggish or has been more prone to infections, then it would be good to get him checked out by a vet.

We can easily test for the most common diseases spread by ticks and can also help advise on treatment and prevention plans for the future, so it's not a bad idea to go in for a regular vet consult.

My dog had an engorged tick. Does she need a vet visit for disease?

As long as the area on Miley's skin looks okay (no significant redness or swelling), then you don't need to take her to the vet right away after finding an attached tick. If the tick was attached for long enough to transmit disease, like Lyme disease, Ehrlichia or Anaplasma, then it takes about 6 months for a blood test to diagnose an infection. Unfortunately, there are no measures to take to stop any of these diseases if she's already been infected. I would certainly mention this tick attachment to Miley's vet the next time she goes in for an exam because her vet will most likely recommend running a tick-borne disease blood test about 6 months from the date of tick exposure. In the long run, definitely add some tick prevention in for Miley. Seresto collars, K9 Advantix II, Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica or Credelio are all great options to discuss with your vet. This likley is some scar tissue left behind that was initially caused by a localized inflammatory response from the tick. However, to ensure it isn't something to be concerned about, you can opt to have this area tested through your vet with a skin cytology or biopsy. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian though to determine if any treatment is needed. Ticks are capable of spreading diseases to dogs. He should also be started on a flea and tick preventive. My dog has an inflated lump. Is it a tick or mass? When to see a vet?

That does not appear to be a tick, but a small mass or cyst. You have a couple options. The first is to have your veterinarian examine King and perform a simple fine needle aspirate of the lump. The samples collected can be submitted for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. Treatment would depend on the results. The other option would be to monitor the lump for rapid change or growth. See your vet for an exam and aspirate if the lump causes discomfort, grows rapidly or changes appearance.

Hard bump on dog's neck after tick removal. What should I do?

At this point, there may not be much you can do other than monitor it closely and keep it clean and dry. Protect the lump from scratching or other trauma. Your normal vet may also be able to provide some guidance via telehealth. Make sure to have it checked out as soon as your veterinarian opens again. If the mass starts getting worse, call and see if any emergency clinics are still open. Also, it's likely there are still some normal veterinary clinics that are open and I recommend to call around and look. You need to make arrangements for an appointment ahead of time and follow the assigned protocols. I hope this helps.
