My puppy was neutered yesterday. Is Rimadyl causing his constipation?

Hello. If Nero was severely infested with intestinal parasites/worms, it is possible that the dead worms are causing a blockage. You can try feeding him a teaspoon of canned pumpkin with each meal as this can act as a mild laxative. Make sure there is no accumulation of feces at the rectum that can literally plug him up. Sometimes sitting in a warm bath of Epsom salts can help relieve a blockage, too. If he is still having problems passing feces tomorrow, please have him seen by your veterinarian. Rarely Rimadyl can cause adverse side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, liver issues and kidney issues.Olive's diarrhea may be unrelated but to be safe the Rimadyl likely should be stopped. I would also recommend contacting your veterinarian and be prepared to take her to an ER clinic if the diarrhea worsens or she has any vomiting

Yes, I would be concerned. These are not usual side effects of Rimadyl, and given that Jelly has back problems, I would be concerned that it is having effects on the nerves leading to her bladder and bowels causing these symptoms. I would have Jelly seen by a vet as soon as possible.

Given that Stanley was recently neutered and had abdominal surgery to find the undescended testicle, he may be a little painful still and that's causing him to cry out in pain when pooping. It could be as well that if he is on pain medication, it is making him a little constipated, and you can try adding a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) in with his food to see if that helps. If this doesn't help, and he's still crying when pooping after 24-48 hours, then I would take him into the vet for an exam.

Any surgery, especially abdominal surgery, can cause an ileus, or slowing of gut movement. If not watched, it can lead to constipation, but I would not worry yet. If she is eating, you can give her about 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin ( not pie filling ) a couple of times a day. The fiber will act like a natural laxative. If she has not had a BM by Tuesday evening, call your veterinarian. They may recommend a stronger laxative. Take care.

I'm very sorry to hear about Gizmo. Half of a 25mg Rimadyl tablet is a relatively normal dose for a 10.4lb animal, maybe a little high, but not enough to usually cause a significant problem in the short term. Some of the side effects that can occur with Rimadyl do include vomiting and dark tarry stool as a result of ulceration of the stomach lining. It is not a very common side effect but it is something that we can see. Without a full autopsy, it is impossible to know for sure why Gizmo passed. However, it certainly is curious that he was having those clinical signs immediately after giving the medication.
