Why are my dog's ribs swollen after spay surgery? Is it normal?

Hi ! Thank you for reaching .The area you are concerned about is a bit swollen, so I think it would be wise to have Tony checked over during normal routine hours. It might not be anything to worry about but I think it is better to have a feel of Tony’s tummy and perhaps have an ultrasound done to understand a bit better what is going on. Hope this helps !

Poor Roxy. I would recommend taking Roxy to a vet to make sure the area that is swollen is nothing to be concerned about. After trauma it is possible a hematoma (blood filled pocket), broken rib, damaged muscle or even abscess (infection) are possible. Usually there is no air in the abdomen, but when we open the abdomen in order to remove the ovaries and uterus, air gets into it. Sometimes, after closing up, some air is retained. Over the next week or so the air will be absorbed and disappears. It is not dangerous, maybe a little bit uncomfortable.

Opie looks pretty normal in the pictures. It may be that he's just getting a bit overweight. If he's breathing normally, not panting while resting and calm, has good energy and appetite, then it's probably ok to watch it and just keep an eye on his weight. If he's doing anything funny, or you just have a bad feeling about it, it's worthwhile to have a quick exam to make sure it's normal. Good luck!

Yes, I would have it relooked at to be safe. Without seeing it in person, I can't say if it's normal or not, so it's always good to have any concerning part of your dog's body checked out by a vet.

Oh no, poor EB! I'm very concerned that the swelling has gotten so big that she has trouble walking, sitting, laying down, and moving. I would be very concerned that this swelling could eventually affect her ability to breath. Based on what you have described, I would consider this a medical emergency as this is not a normal thing seen after surgery. She needs veterinary treatment now in my opinion, and waiting to have her seen could be life threatening. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. I hope this helps!

Pictures may help but this sounds like it may be a birth defect or injury and xrays may be required to assess fully what is going on. I would recommend an urgent vet check if there is any weakness, reduced growth rate compared to the others or panting/rapid breathing
