My dog has a retained baby tooth. Will it cause damage or need extraction?

If the deciduous (baby) teeth are still in after the adult teeth have fully erupted, then they will need to be extracted by your veterinarian. Left in, they can push the adult teeth out of alignment, catch food and debris and promote infection. The teeth can be extracted while Turbo is anesthetized if he is to be neutered soon. This is common in smaller breeds but eaisly remedied and should cause no further issues once the baby teeth are out.

This can be a common issue in young dogs, especially of small breeds. If the canine tooth doesn't fall out by the time the adult tooth has grown in, we normally recommend removal of this tooth at the pet's spay or neuter. The tooth can be a site that easily gets infected or is easily broken, and this is the reason we recommend removal,though we do see dogs who live with the baby tooth and don't have problems with them. They are also an area where tartar quickly accumulates as they age.

Hi, sorry to hear Jazzmine isn't feeling well. What you are seeing is a retained deciduous tooth. It's a baby tooth that has never fallen out. From the pictures I cannot tell if it is infected or not. She will likely need it removed. If she is going to the vet tomorrow, do not give her any medication as this may interfere with what the vet wants to give her. Aspirin can be harmful to dogs so I would not give this. Antibiotics may be needed but will take a few days to work and will not help her tonight. It is best to just wait for the vet appointment. Good luck with getting this resolved!

It should be removed, as it can cause Casper's permanent teeth to move into incorrect positions, resulting in an abnormal bite pattern. It can also lead to abnormal jaw position. I would take him into the vet to have the tooth removed under anesthesia.

I usually do this at the time of spay so that they are only under anesthesia once. There will be some discomfort, but pain medications should be sent some to help with that. If you don’t plan to spay her, then she will need anesthesia to have all the teeth pulled. It is a pretty quick procedure, but she will likely be kept for a few hours to monitor her after anesthesia. What you are describing is actually retained baby teeth in the front and adult teeth that erupted behind these that did not succesffuly push out the baby teeth. Retained deciduous teeth aren't necessarily a serious matter initially, but over time they cause debris and foodstuffs to trap in between the overcrowded area and this causes advanced dental disease and bacteria problems later on for your pet. It is always advised and recommended to remove the retained baby teeth in the near future to avoid these complications, and this is often best done during another surgical procedure such as during a spay or neuter, because the retained baby teeth will require the pet to be under general anesthesia in order to be done safely and efficiently. In the meantime I would encourage you to brush your puppy's teeth daily to help remove foodstuffs from becoming entrapped.

It's definitely a tooth, at 6 months of age I would expect Bella to have already lost her deciduous ("baby") canine teeth and for the adult ones to be nearly fully erupted. From the looks of things, this is definitely a deciduous tooth, as opposed to an adult one, as adult canine teeth have very long roots. Purely on speculation, I would wonder if Bella could have been playing with another puppy "friend" and some rough play could have caused the other puppy to lose the deciduous canine and have it become lodged in Bella's muzzle. Another explanation would be that it's Bella's deciduous canine tooth, and she somehow managed to get it wedged in her muzzle, again through playing. The important take-away here is that this is only part of a deciduous canine tooth, so to be absolutely sure that there isn't a piece of a root retained in her gumline (which can serve as a focus for chronic infection), I would recommend having your vet shoot a quick x-ray, maybe even while she's asleep for her spaying surgery, in order to be sure there's not a fragment of the tooth left behind. If there is, it should be a pretty simple matter to remove it at that time.
