My dog has red welts. How long for food allergy diet to work?

It takes 4-6weeks for allergens to completely leave the skin layers. If persisting longer than this the diet should be reassessed and other triggers such as external allergies, parasites and infections should be investigated

Oh my. Poor girl. Only a very small percentage of dogs actually have a grain allergy. Allergies to beef, chicken, turkey and lamb are more common. I would try to avoid these proteins in her food. Also food alleriges are not as common as environmental alllergies or flea allergies. I have the most success prescribing Apoquel to my patients, because it isn't a steroid and is fast acting (within 24 hrs). OTher choices are Temaril P and Atopica. Pet formulated fish oils (from your local pet store) can also be given in addition to the allergy medication to provide some natural skin anti-inflammatory properties. Poor guy. The groin is a pretty common spot for allergy infections to show up because there's less hair there and it can be more moist depending on how he's built. It's very possible there are more red areas that you can't see because of his hair. I would recommend talking to his vet about switching to a prescription diet, since it seems like food allergies are definitely a real possibility for him. The over the counter diets are not manufactured for dogs with allergies and almost always have some contaminants. It's also possible he has environmental allergies as well and may need a stronger allergy medication for all or part of the year.

One important fact to remember is that grains are very rarely the cause of any allergies in pets. Additionally, grain free diets have been linked to heart disease though it is not fully understood at this time. If Stella does respond, it will be 12-16 weeks before you will know if it helped or not. Additionally, she cannot have any other treats/foods/flavored supplements during this trial period. These do indeed look like part of an allergic reaction (wheals/hives) and generally settle down after 12-24hours. Monitor closely for any internal complications such as vomiting, diarhhea, panting or weakness from an increased heart rate which may require hospitalisation and intravenous fluid drip. It can sometimes take up to two months to fully see results of a new food before any symptoms are completely gone if it is a food-based reaction. I would hesitate to keep switching foods as you won't be able to accurately judge if a food is causing it and may just cause added GI upset on top of the itching and scratching. If Jax is still breaking out very badly it would be best to contact the vet doing the food trial with you so they can take note and make suggestions on whether a change should happen or if you should stay on the food for a while longer.

Food sensitivities can take 4-6weeks to resolve but the sudden swelling should reduce within 3days if this is indeed the cause. If not resolving or she develops any pain or breathing difficulties you should have her assessed urgently
