My dog has red spots around her spay incision. Is it infected?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 60 lbs

My dog got spayed about a week ago and I recently have noticed that she shad red spots around her belly. Could this have been due to her trying to lick the incision? ( her incision came looking like that so I’m not sure if that’s healthy)

That looks like she has a skin infection and that could affect her incision. I suggest getting her back in to see the vet as soon as possible for an exam and probably antibiotics or some other medication to help her heal quicker.

Poor Hippo! I am glad she did well with surgery, but sorry to hear she has had some complications. The picture looks like her skin is pretty irritated. It could be infected or just irritated. You could try a warm water and epsom
salt compress a few times a day. However if it is not improving or if it looks worse at any time she really should be evaluated again. I hope she improves quickly!

That looks like moist dermatitis (superficial skin infection). You really need to get her back to your vet for an exam. She will probably need some oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to get that under control - it looks pretty sore. For now, you can apply a thin layer of Neosporin and be sure to keep an E-collar (cone) on her head to keep her from licking at it. It will never heal if she keeps licking it.

Yes this can be normal after surgery. The staples are holding nicely but the incision is inflammed and bruised more than some incisions. Please make sure she isn’t licking this by using a cone on her. If the redness and inflammation continue she may be getting a low grade infection so if she’s not on antibiotics in addition to the pain meds then you may want to bring her in for a recheck. Don’t clean the incision since forming a scab over it will help it heal. This should look less red every day. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Remi.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Panda's spay incision does appear to be red and a little swollen. Swelling at a spay site can be due to a variety of reasons, including infection, inflammation from a reaction to the suture material, or over-activity after her procedure, among others. I would recommend Panda be seen by her regular veterinarian to have the swelling evaluated, and start any medications (antibiotic, anti-inflammatory) that she may need. In the meantime, I would recommend icing the area as well. Good luck!

Is the red spot on my spayed dog's incision from e-collar or infection?

I am concerned that it looks like bruising, and that there appears to be a large scab over the incision. Neither of these things are particularly uncommon, but both warrant an exam by a veterinarian to ensure that there is no infection, fluid pockets, or bleeding that could occur after any surgery. Also, make sure that Sandy wears her e-collar at all times to prevent licking as this could make the possible issues even worse.

Unfortunately only one picture is attached, and I think it may be the earliest picture given your description in the question. If the incision looks more red and scabby, that suggests infection. My dog has red marks under skin near spay incision. Is it normal?

Ghese are subcutaneous hemorrhages (bleeding under the skin). Your dog may have a problem with blood coagulation, I suggest you take her back to your vet for a recheck. It is likely nothing to worry about provided these areas do not get bigger. If you feel that the dark areas are indeed increasing in number and size you will need to take Blue to your vet right away.

My dog's surgical site is red and hurts after 8 days. Is it infected?

Hello. This may need to be rechecked by the surgeon. There is some redness extending out on each side which can indicate that it is infected. I would expect it to look more healed after 8 days, so it is possible that there is some infection which is delaying the healing. I would recommend a recheck visit or possibly calling to let them know that it still seems painful . They may be able to look at your photos and determine if they want to see him or dispense any medication.

My dog has red raw spots on her shaved belly after spay. What to do?

Poor girl, that doesn't look very comfortable. I'd recommend wiping the areas of with hydrogen peroxide once (avoiding the incision for her spay), and then putting her in a baby onsie (maybe two) in addition to an e-collar. The onsie is to protect her a skin if she tries to scratch. If it's looking worse instead of better after 24 hours, I'd recommend taking her back to the vet to see if she need antibiotics. Itching or licking damages skin, which allows normal bacteria on the surface to set up a mild infection, and sometimes the immune system can clear it up if the itching stops, but sometimes oral or topical medications are required.
