What are these red, smelly, rapidly growing lumps on my dog's groin?

Pet's info: Dog | Husky | Male | neutered | 8 years and 6 months old | 80 lbs

Our dog has a two growths near his groin. They’re red and came very rapidly. They also begin to smell really bad this evening. He licks them and has a slight limp but he still lets us touch them. We would like to know what it is.

Oh, those do look bad! This could be malignant lumps. Unfortunately in a dog Toby's age, there's always a chance any lump could be malignant. They could also be cysts or from a skin infection. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Give his vet a call in the morning to make him an appointment. Best of luck.

Red spots could be one of a couple different things:

1) A blood blister - usually get these from some sort of pinching or biting to the area.
2) Tumor - there a a couple of different tumors that will look red. The severity depends on the type of tumor.

Your description of the red spot going away and turning into a bump is not quite clear to me, but I'll assume you mean that it is still red and is now raised. If that is the case, then it is most likely a tumor; especially since there is more than one.

Don't panic just yet though. There is a type of red tumor that we commonly see on the abdomen and around the groin that will spread to different areas of the skin, but usually does not spread to internal organs.

If you notice that these bumps are growing and spreading, then my best recommendation is to have a veterinarian do an exam. They will be able to take a sample of one of these bumps and determine exactly what it is. If it is a tumor, then the sooner you discover it, the better chance it has at being successfully treated.

Why is my dog licking a red bump between his toes and acting sick?

This is either a tumor, or infection. Infections are common in this area, because things like thorns and grass awns can get stuck in-between the toes. Tumors are a possibility in this area as well. We worry about certain types of tumors on the toes, because they tend to spread easier than others. Since Toby is also acting lethargic, I am more worried about cancer, or a systemic infection. Considering this, it's best to have Toby seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible in the next day or two. The vet will be able to quickly narrow-down the cause of this and start providing treatment to make him feel better. They will also be able to give you various diagnostic and treatment options. I hope that helps and Toby feels better soon.

My old dog has a fast-growing, oozing, smelly leg lump. What is it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. Given the fact that it is growing quickly, a malignant tumor is more likely. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My 13-year-old dog has sore, growing lumps. Are they cancer?

With any new lump or lump that is changing, it is always best to have your veterinarian look at them and a fine needle aspirated can be done to obtain a sample of cells. If these cells look suspicious of a malignancy, then your vet can recommend surgery. From the photos that you have posted, my guess is that these may be benign, non-cancerous masses. These can still cause problems, though, by bleeding and getting infected. I would schedule Max for an exam at your earliest convenience so that you and your vet can weigh the pros and cons of surgery since he is a senior.

My dog has a swollen, smelly lump he keeps licking. What to do?

It sounds as though this lump bothers Avery quite a bit since he keeps licking it. The lump could be caused by a benign or malignant mass, cyst, etc. and may have become infected due to Avery's licking. At this point, there isn't anything that you can do at home. A vet should examine Avery and will likely need to perform a fine needle aspirate (using a needle to draw out a few cells from the mass - it's quick and relatively painless!) so that the sample can be examined microscopically. From there, Avery may need oral antibiotics to treat any infection. Until you can take him to the vet, put an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further licking and irritation of the lump. Try to avoid putting any additional hydrogen peroxide on the lump, as repeated use can delay healing. I hope that he's on the mend soon!

What are these irritated growths on my dog's leg and near her anus?

Unfortunately it is hard to tell what that lump is just by the picture. I would recommend you take her in to see your vet for an exam and potentially a fine needle aspirate of this lump. A fine needle aspirate is a way to try to exfoliate cells from the lump and look at them under the microscope to try to tell what this lump is. Even if it is a benign lump, she may need to have it removed if she continues to lick it. She also may need topical treatment or potentially antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatories if the lump is infected or causing her pain. I often recommend taking lumps off of legs sooner, as they are easier and generally less expensive to remove and close the skin when they are small. Large lumps on limbs can be quite difficult to remove, as there isn't much additional skin in this area to close over the wound.
