Why does my dog have red skin and yellow scabs all over his body?

Skin lesions can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Opehli seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the lesions you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to shave the area and look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe Opehli in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the area, and put an e-collar (cone) on Opehli to help reduce the risk of licking/scratching at the area, but this will likely not resolve the lesions. The most common cause of scabs like this with red skin underneath is a bacterial skin infection called pyoderma - this can occur on its own, or due to an underlying skin problem like allergies or mange. If the scabs are confined to a single small area and don't seem to be bothering Luigi, you can try applying a topical antibiotic spray to the area for the next few days to see if the problem resolves. If there is no improvement after 2-3 days, or if the scabs become painful or itchy or seem to be spreading, I would recommend having Luigi examined by a vet since he may need prescription antibiotics or other medication to treat the infection.

It looks like Maggie may have a skin infection or a type of dermatitis called seborrheic dermatitis in which the oily glands of the skin are producing too much oil and causing irritation to the skin. There are certain shampoos to treat both conditions. Benzoyl Peroxide treats the seborrheic dermatitis and a chlorhexidine based shampoo would help treat a skin infection. This presentation is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Yellow exudate can indicate infection, so it's best that you bring Brady in for an exam at the vet to get to the bottom of it. They will likely take a small sample of the skin to look at under the microscope, and they may also use a device called a Woods Lamp (a blacklight) to detect if the lesions are being caused by a fungus, like ringworm. He'll also be checked thoroughly for parasites, like fleas. Once they determine the cause, they can provide a treatment - whether it be a medicated bath, topical ointment, or potentially even a systemic antibiotic. I don't recommend doing anything to the lesions at home until you see a vet, as it may make it more difficult to diagnose. Good luck, and I hope Brady feels better soon!

Whiskey has a skin infection and it looks to affect a fairly large area. Dogs can get skin infections for many reasons including flea bites, hot spots, yeast infections, allergies, skin mites and ringworm (which humans can get). Whiskey needs to see the veterinarian within the next 24 hours to start treatment and stop continued spread of the infection. Generally these pets will need the hair shaved and the area cleaned, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and some sort of protection (like an elizabethan collar) to prevent any scratching (this can make it worse). For now, Whiskey should wear a harness with his tags instead of the collar since the collar may be rubbing on the skin. The doctor may be able to determine the underlying cause from the exam or they may recommend a few basic diagnostics. I hope this helps and that he heals quickly.

Your veterinarian would probably take a sample and evaluate it under a microscope to see whether there might be bacteria or yeast present. If the swab showed yeast or bacteria that would likely indicate that Opie has a skin infection. There are other things that can cause red skin lesions such as insect bites, allergic reactions, and even a fungal infection called ringworm (this is a fungus, not an actual worm despite the name). It does look like Opie has licked off a fair amount of fur, which can signal that Opie is itchy. your veterinarian, in addition to treating the source of the skin lesions would likely also place an e-collar to prevent him from licking at the site and would probably prescribe a medication for itch.
