My dog has a red, raw lip wound. Is it serious if she's acting normal?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could have been due to a traumatic injury while playing. I think though that it would be a good idea to have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. The main reason is making sure that there is no other traumatic injury present that needs to be addressed. Otherwise, at least on the picture it looks fairly superficial so you can plan on applying a thin film of triple antibiotic twice daily until you see your veterinarian. Good luck!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From the photo (thanks for attaching one!) it mostly looks like irritation. This could be from chewing a toy, her bowls, etc. It does not seem to be a truly pressing matter-and especially so if it does not bother her. However-if it persists or worsens, I would try calling your local vet to see if they can take a look or prescribe you some antibiotic ointment to help clear the area of secondary bacterial infection. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. If this does not resolve within 24-48 hours, then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I am so sorry Spanky is having this issue. I would recommend bringing Spanky to a veterinarian. The reason for this is to not only clean up the lesion, but to also dispense medication and see if we can figure out the cause of this. This could be from allergies or from a cut or scratch that Spanky kept bothering with and it just got infected. Poor guy! Your can try this: It won’t hurt him if he licks it off. However, if it’s not improving in 5 days or so, I would recommend that you schedule a recheck with your vet. I’m worried he may need antibiotics, as he may have a deep skin infection. If it continues to be a problem , a skin biopsy may be recommended. Thanks for asking PetCoach!

Hello there and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. Thank you for the pictures of Sadie. They are perfect for trying to understand what is causing her discomfort on her lip area. His (you listed Sadie as a male, so I will refer to Sadie as him) behavior that you are describing is letting you know that this area is very irritating and uncomfortable to him. Possible reasons for the redness and irritation on his lip area, particularly in his breed mix type are: infection of the lip fold area and/or autoimmune disorder/disease. There may be other areas on Sadie's body that have a similar appearance as well. Sadie should be seen by his veterinarian as soon as you can get him in for an appointment so your vet can closely examine this area, the rest of the mouth and look at other areas on his body to help with a diagnosis. Then, Sadie can be placed on medication right away that will make him feel better and help clear up this area for him. Best of luck with Sadie.
