Why does my dog have a red bald spot and thinning hair on his chest?

First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). You can see this occur in some dogs and it can be completely normal but, just like anything, it can be pathologic as well. Monitor the skin very closely for redness, itching, progression of hairloss or scabbing. If these signs are seen it is more likely pathologic and he should be examined by his veterinarian. The lesion on Gift's chest could be due to ringworm, mange, a skin infection, among other causes. In order to differentiate between these types of lesions, Gift will need to take a trip to the vet for an exam and diagnostic testing (skin scrapes, skin cytology and fungal culture). Be aware that ringworm and Sarcoptic mange can be transmitted to people and other pets, so be sure to practice extra-thorough hand washing after handling Gift until these conditions have been ruled out. I'm not sure if the beetle spray would have caused this, but it's possible depending on the ingredient used and concentration. For the most part these sprays are usually some formulation of a pyrethrin, which is only irritating to the skin at high concentrations. However, the fact that they both have signs of irritation and hair loss in this area is very suspicious of a contact allergy/irritant. I would look for any other potential causes of this and try to remove it while the dogs are recovering. For now, it's best to wash the affected area with cool water and dog shampoo. You can flush the area with cool water daily to help provide relief and keep them from getting skin infections. Once the skin is not red anymore, you'll know they are healing and will likely grow their hair back within a month or so. It's also possible that this is the start of a mange infestation. Itchy skin and hair loss is often due to the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. If you bathe more than that, or use a shampoo or soap that is meant for people, then you could be damaging the normal protective barrier of the skin. Hi there and thanks for posting this question. Certainly there can be many causes for this, but young dogs commonly will have a mite called demodex mite. I suspect by the age and description that this may be the problem. I would recommend that he be seen by a veterinarian. They will likely do a skin scraping to look for mites. It sounds like he could have allergies. Allergies commonly cause redness of the skin and can affect pretty much any part of the body. If there is also flaking, crusting, itching or an odor, those are signs that the skin is infected. Infection can be from yeast or bacteria or sometimes a combination of the two. It could also be a parasite on the skin such as mites. I would recommend taking him to your veterinarian for a skin scraping. This is where they take a sample from the surface of the skin and look at it under the microscope. This way they can determine the cause and know how best to treat it.
