Why does my dog have a recurring draining hole near her rear?

Wondering what could be causing this so that we can figure out preventing it. We've been doctoring it up with first aid gel and putting a doggie diaper on her to keep her from irritating it. It has healed up and it's reacured twice.

Hi there. From what I can see in the photo, it looks like your girl has a small draining hole just below and to one side of her rectum. Based on the location and overall appearance, I would be suspicious that this may be an abscessed anal sac - these are scent glands that dogs have on either side of their anus, that can sometimes become impacted or infected, and may abscess out through a hole in the skin that looks very similar to this.

I would recommend taking your dog to the vet for an exam, to get a better idea of exactly what's going on. Your veterinarian can do a rectal exam to check her anal glands, and if this is the issue, she will likely need prescription medication (antibiotics +/- an anti-inflammatory such as an NSAID or steroid) to effectively treat the infection. If this continues to be a recurring problem, the gland may even need to be surgically removed.

Based on the location I would guess that this might be the draining tract from an anal gland abscess. Anal glands can become impacted or infected and an abscess can form that ruptures to the skin. You should see a veterinarian who can confirm the diagnosis and prescribe antibiotics and pain or anti-inflammatory medication as needed. Sedation to flush the glands might be required.

What's this draining mass near my dog's tail? Is it serious?

The most common reason that we will see what you are describing if it is close to the anus is an anal gland rupture. Why does my dog have a deep hole on her skin near neck or anus?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. Why won't my dog's skin hole heal and keeps getting infected?

This is likely to be due to a skin cyst which is getting intermittently infected. Only by removing the capsule of the cyst surgically the problem can resolve as the capsule itself is secreting the white material. I am not sure whether this has been already done or not, but commonly this is the underlying problem. A recurrent and resistant infection may be present as well and ideally a bacterial swap should be perform to rule out this possibility. Why does my dog have a painful red bump on their anal area?

Why does my dog have a pus-filled bump near her anus? Can I squeeze it?

Hi and thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This appears to be what we call an anal gland abscess, which is an infected anal gland. The anal glands are two sacks location at the 4 and 10 o'clock position that are usually expressed when your pet poops. However, some pets have a hard time expressing and emptying these sacks on their own, which leads to them filling up and getting infected. This needs to be addressed by your vet unfortunately because the sacks needs to be opened up and flushed. This often has to be done under a mild sedative. For now just apply a cold compress to the area. I hope that Fiffy gets better soon. Best wishes and take care.
