How to tell if my dog is ready for a new puppy to join the family?

This can be a difficult question to answer because it will vary from dog to dog. The dog's personality will determine whether or not they adjust well to a new housemate. It does not necessarily matter whether the dog is older or younger. Some things you can do in the home when introducing new dogs are keeping the interactions very limited and making sure the dogs are under supervision the whole time they are getting to know each other. Also avoid feeding the dogs or giving them treats while they are together as this can sometimes cause aggressive behavior. There is no way to know in advance how two dogs will get along. Our best guess is based on previous behavior in similar situations, so if Tigger has had issues with mounting and becoming aggressive in the past, it's very possible it will occur with your mom's dog. I would recommend that if you're bringing him, introduce the dogs in a neutral space (not your mom's house, because it is your mom's dog's space) and have a backup plan to keep the dogs separated or board your dog in the area if the introduction does not go well. Without knowing how Cookie interacts with other dogs, it would be hard to say. I would recommend bringing her to a local park to see how she reacts- is she interested? Does she want to play? Or does she avoid and shy away from the other dogs? This may give you some idea as to how she may interact with a new dog in the house. If you do decide to get a new dog, I highly recommend bringing Cookie with you to the shelter or other place you are looking for one. Most shelters will allow you to introduce your current dog to any potential new family members to see if they are going to get along. As for age, it really depends more on your dog's personality and that of the new dog. An older dog that is super hyper may not work well compared to a very calm puppy, etc. As with any new pet, take introductions slow. Even if they got along outside the home, they may still have some scuffles over shared items, spaces, etc. Separating the two until both are calm, and then trying again to reintroduce them can help ensure things go more smoothly during the transition.

Look for a dog who is similar age and size as well as temperament to Max. If Max is very playful, then you will want another dog who is also very playful. If Max is not very playful and more laid-back, he will not appreciate a dog who is jumping all over him constantly. Other things that can help would be to make sure that both dogs are spayed and neutered. The sex hormones make pets more prone to aggression, being territorial and fighting for dominance. Also try to set up a meet and greet on neutral territory if possible. lastly, before they meet for the first time, make sure Max is well exercised before hand. This newcomer has no expectations, so be sure to dote on Chico as much as ever so he feels secure. Then, gradually, you can increase the amount of time you give the new guy (without taking anything away from Chico). The second issue you are facing is that the dogs have to sort out, for themselves, who's who at the zoo. In other words, they may have one order of inportance to you, but they need to determine amongst themselves who's top dog, who's in the middle, and who's on the bottom. There may be a bit of snapping and barking going on, but as long as there are no injuries or serious fighting, leave them to it. Once they get it squared away, everyone will know his place in the pecking order and will (usually) behave accordingly.
