Why does my dog have a rash on his chest after wearing a new harness?

This rash may be because of the contact with the harness. If this were the case, removing the harness and a bath should help. If after this it doesn't go away, then he may be having a reaction to something else, and may need to see your vet. American Bulldogs tend to have very sensitive skin.

I'm sorry to hear that Hatchi has developed this skin lesion. Possible causes include a bacterial skin infection (most commonly caused by underlying allergies), ringworm, mange, or simply irritation from the sand outside. Without diagnostic testing at the vet's office, it is impossible to definitively determine the cause of this lesion. However, given his recent changes, you can try a few things at home to try to resolve the issue with a bit of trial and error. For starters, try to return Hatchi to his normal diet, but be sure to do so gradually by mixing the foods together over 5-7 days to decrease the likelihood of causing gastrointestinal upset. Try to keep him indoors, particularly while this lesion is healing. If possible, try to eliminate sand from his normal habitat since this can be quite abrasive. While indoors, leave his collar off to prevent moisture from building up under the collar and clean the collar well. Make sure that Hatchi is receiving a high quality flea and tick preventative, such as Nexgard, Bravecto or K9 Advantix II regularly, even though you haven't had any noticeable issues. If after all of these changes the skin lesions persist or worsen, Hatchi will need to go to his vet for further evaluation. I hope that all goes well!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What you are seeing appears to be a rash that could be secondary to chafing. In a young active dog chafing can be common from high activity due to the friction leading to the redness and inflammation that you are seeing currently. I typically recommend using a spray such as malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the area until resolved. This spray will have a steroid in it to reduce inflammation and redness. It also has an antibacterial component to it so that if there is a secondary bacterial infection in this area it will help treat that. To help prevent future episodes, I typically recommend applying a greasy ointment in the armpit area such as Biobalm. This is a product that you can find online quite easily. I hope this helps! This may be caused by a skin infection, exacerbated by allergies, which can be itchy. I recommend limiting Bauer's diet to only his regular dog food and using a gentle antibacterial dog shampoo on the area.
