My dog has a rash. Is it an allergic reaction? What should I do?

As your vet said This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. It is very important anyway , in order to rule out skin parasites, to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Buster collar may be useful to avoid further scratching/rubbing. Poor guy. He is likely having an allergic reaction to something he was exposed to outside. You can give him an antihistamine to see if this improves things. As long as his breathing is ok and there is no swelling around the neck, he is likely to be fine after 12 hrs or so as the reaction subsides. You can also try bathing him in an oatmeal or hypoallergenic shampoo to help calm down the skin. If the skin reaction does not improve or worsens by tomorrow then have your vet take a look at him and they can administer stronger medications to subside the skin reaction. It will take a bit of investigating on your part to figure out what he could have been exposed to to cause him to break out into hives.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There seems to be two different types of 'spots' on Baxter. The pinky raised ones look like an allergic reaction, and the type that is usually caused by a bug bite. This would also make his ears swell and maybe his face including his muzzle/jowels and around his eyes. This will go away with time, and you can give him Benedryl as well, at a dose of 2mg/kg (which is about 50mg for a dog of Baxter's size). Please make sure the only active ingredient is Diphenhydramine, and that you don't get a 'non-drowsy' version as these have other drugs that are VERY toxic to dogs . The other spots that are only on his left side, under his left arm and down his left side, look like bruising on the picture, and more of a scratch, almost like road rash. If this is new as well then I would recommend getting Baxter seen right away, especially if he has no history of a big trauma. The bruising is especially worrying if he hasn't had a big hit/accident, as it is worrying for a clotting disorder. Best of luck with Baxter.

Oh no, poor Winston! His face looks so sad. It sounds like he may be having an allergic reaction, and the lumps are hives. You need to take him into a vet immediately for treatment, as allergic reactions can progress to swelling of the face and muzzle, and subsequent respiratory distress. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. Poor Snow! Her skin looks really reactive. I really think you should take Snow to your vet for an exam at your earliest convenience. She may need oral antibiotics or some anti-inflammatory medications. I don't think it is an emergency though. To me it looks like a contact dermatitis (allergy). Poison ivy is possible but it is actually pretty rare in dogs. Benadryl is fine to give but you need to make sure you are giving enough. Dogs take a MUCH higher dose than we do. The dose is 1mg/pound of body weight. For example, 25 pound dog should get one 25mg capsule/tablet. If she is 50 pounds, then 2 of the 25mg capsules. You can round up if needed as it is pretty safe to give. She can have that every 12 hours. Hi, from your pictures it appears that Mackenzie Ray is having an allergic reaction to something. You may see hives, small bumps, all over her skin. If she is vomiting or having trouble breathing, she needs to see a vet immediately. You can try giving her some Benadryl to see if that resolves. I cannot give you a dose but you can look one up online. Also, a shampoo with steroid can give her some relief. If this does not resolve, she may need to see a vet for some injections to make the bumps go down. Good luck, I hope this helps!
