My dog has small pus-filled pimples on her tummy. Is it serious?

My dog has just a few small puss filled pimples on her lower tummy. They don't seem to be bothering her, but should I be worried?

Hello there. Penny may have a skin infection. I recommend bathing her in an antibiotic and antifungal shampoo. I also recommend taking her to the veterinarian to help determine the cause of the pimples, which could be from allergies, scratches, bug bites, etc.

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat her with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advantage), then get her to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation.

If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy.

Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start her on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months.
Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting her on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).

There is also a nice topical spray available if the problem remains on the belly only only, it's called Cortavance and you can get it at the vets.

These appear to be little pus-filled bumps that occur due to a bacterial infection (pyoderma). Puppies commonly get this on their bellies and they usually go away with good cleaning. In an adult dog this can happen when they are in contact with something that irritates the skin and sets up an environment for infection. I recommend cleaning the belly with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day until the bump(s) are gone. If it seems to get worse, then you'll want to take Calamity Jane into the vet for an exam. Pimple type bumps can be a sign of a bacterial infection of the skin that often require antibiotic therapy to treat. I would recommend setting up an appointment with Bella's vet for an exam and they can prescribe antibiotics if that is what she ends up needing!

Being so young and new to you, she will need to see a veterinarian to start her vaccines and deworming. However, you can start by bathing her with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula. You can bathe her twice per week. My dog has whitehead pimples. What are they and what should I do?

Without a [physical exam](https://www.petcoach.co/article/what-does-your-veterinarian-look-for-during-a-physical-exam), I can't say for certain what they are, however, I can tell you that small bumps on the skin which are filled with pus are called pustules. These can be caused by a bacteria infection of the hair follicles (bacterial folliculitis), autoimmune diseases, a bacterial skin infection ([pyoderma](https://www.petcoach.co/article/staphylococcal-pyoderma-a-common-skin-infection-in-dogs-pup/)), a fungal skin infection among others. I would recommend taking Sadie to the vet to determine the cause of the pustules, and to prescribe the proper treatment. In the meantime, do not squeeze them or try to pop them, as you could potentially spread infection. An [e-collar](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/well-and-good-e-collar) (cone) can be used to prevent lickign or chewing until she sees the doctor.
