My dog had puppies in a driveway tube. Are they safe, or should I dig?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Brittany | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 8 months old | 40 lbs

My dog had her puppies in a tube under our driveway. I can’t reach them, they are in the middle of a 15 foot tube. We live in rural Panama, so it’s warm here. My husband says they will be fine there until they are big enough to wander out, but I’m worried. Should I dig the tunnel out? It would be a two day project.

If she is able to get to them to sit with them and nurse them, they will be fine. I would bring her food there so she does not have to leave them and go far to eat though. Once they start moving and wandering out, I would make sure to interact with them as much as possible that way they are used to humans and not scared.
