My dog pulled staples from incision. Is she okay until tomorrow?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 40 lbs

Bella took her e collar off and pulled several staples out. I’m unable to take her to the vet until tomorrow evening. I’m making sure she has her cone on and I’m keeping an eye on it, cleaned it a bit with some padded gauze and limiting all activity. Well she be okay till tomorrow? All vets by me are closed for thanksgiving and I’m unable to take her in the morning and afternoon because of work

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bella. It sounds like you are doing everything right! I would keep her as quiet as possible. Walk her on a leash to go potty and keep her collar on at all times. I am glad you are taking her in to see her veterinarian. If the incision appears to open more and she acts ill, then she will need to be seen sooner. I suspect she will do fine though. I hope this information helps!

It is difficult to say just by the picture, but since the outside skin is separated there, so it is possible that it could separate more. I would still adhere to the strict cage rest guidelines from your vet and not encourage running, jumping, playing etc. There are several layers of sutures placed on pets incisions, so the inner sutures are likely still there, but it is best to play it safe and definitely finish the course of antibiotics that are prescribed. I would also ask your vet if it is good to flush the area daily with just sterile saline daily to encourage this to heal well, since it is a bit open. If you notice the skin separating more or discharge from the area after being on antibiotics for at least 3-4 days, then it is best to take Bella back in to your vet for further wound care.

Peroxide can hinder healing and there are enough staples out that I would be concerned the skin is going to reopen/tear from movement. I would try to get her into your vet or an ER vet ASAP to have a few extra staples/surgical glue put in to prevent the remainder from pulling apart. In the meantime, you can keep the area clean and debris-free with a clean washcloth and limit ALL activity (leashed walks outside to go potty, kennel rest, etc) to minimize pulling apart the skin as it heals.

If you can a) keep her from licking the wound, ie put an e-collar on her and b) keep her quiet in a crate, for example, then you can wait until your appointment tomorrow. If she cannot be kept quiet until then, you should take her to emergency for stapling, gluing or resuturing

My dog ripped out stitches after cyst surgery. Vet's closed, what now?

I would not touch it. Make sure she has an Elizabethan collar on so she doesn’t bite at it. I would call your vet in the morning to have them evaluate the incision to make sure it is completely closed. They may just have you keep the collar on for another 5 days. My dog's staple came out after skin tag removal. Should I worry?

It looks like the wound is separating a bit, and perhaps one of the staples has pulled through the skin, but it is difficult to tell from a photo. There appears to be a little bit of redness/discharge which can sometimes indicate infection. I don't think this is an emergency but I would recommend having your vet examine the incision when they are next open. If your dog is licking at the area then placing an e-collar on him to stop this, or if you do not have one trying to put a long sleeved shirt on him so that he cannot lick at the area and further cause damage until your vet can see him. My dog's TPLO incision: yellow discharge & sunken staples. Emergency?

Since the incision is not open, as long as your pet is feeling okay (no fever, lethargy, etc).. it is okay to wait until the morning. At that time, contact the surgeon and schedule a recheck as they will definitely want to see the incision. It does look like there is some infection starting and that will need to be treated with antibiotics. If you have an Elizabethan collar or "cone" to put on her until you get to the vet, that would be a great idea. The area is probably tender and itchy and she may want to lick it, which may cause more damage.

My dog's spay incision looks bloody. Can I wait until morning?

It's a great idea to bandage it to prevent itching, and as long as the incision isn't excessively bleeding, then it is ok to wait until the morning. I certainly understand you can't watch her all night! You might consider getting a recovery suit, as that may help prevent her from itching the site. If you have a crate, I would keep her in the crate overnight to keep her from moving around too much. You are doing the right thing by taking her to a vet first thing in the morning :-)

Dog's spay incision bleeding, vet closed. How to prevent infection?

Keep an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking. Restrict activity as much as possible. As long as there is no active bleeding, Lilo can likely wait until your veterinarian is available. If there is active bleeding, discharge, lethargy or fever then have her seen at the nearest veterinary ER.
