My 11-month-old Pit Bull is pregnant. Is it safe for her and pups?

Genetics of coat color are complicated in dogs so we can’t help much in that department. I do have some comments about the rest though. First, from an ethical perspective, I feel compelled to let you know that about 40% of dogs and puppies in shelters nation-wide are pit bulls and pit bull mixes. Breeding pit bulls is highly discouraged by most veterinarians since we know that a lot of them end up euthanized or in shelters. If you do decide to proceed, here are some medical suggestions: Female dogs should not be bred until at least 2 years of age to slow them to achieve complete maturity. They are more likely to birth without complications if allowed to do so. They should be fed puppy food while pregnant- unrestricted in the last trimester and while nursing. She’ll need an X-ray at about 45-55 days to determine how many pups she is carrying. That way, you know when all of them have arrived! (Or when to worry if they have not all arrived.) Gestation in dogs is around 60 days. If the tie was successful, Ava will be due around St. Patty’s day. Generally around 45 days of gestation x-rays of the mom’s belly can be taken to determine how many pup skeletons/pups there are which is useful information to know when she is giving birth (as in if you know there are 6 pups and she is in labor for more than 2 hours after the first pup, she may need to be brought to the ER for a C-section/monitoring). She will need plenty of high quality food during pregnancy and nursing. Supplementing her usual diet with extra canned food may be helpful. Good luck!

It's not recommended to mate a dog on their first heat because they aren't physically and emotionally mature, but they can be fine giving birth. Because a male border collie is around Morti's weight, it's fine she was impregnated by one. If you don't want any further puppies, I recommend spaying her after her puppies have weaned. This is unlikely a false pregnancy. it is more likely that the puppies are smaller than normal pitbull puppies as the sire is small or that she just has 2 or 3 puppies. Gestation is on average 63 - 65 days, so count back to when she encountered the male and you know approximately when she will have her puppies.

Homegirl definitely has fairly prominent abdominal distension! Dogs' gestation typically lasts 62-65 days, so I suppose it is still possible that she may be nearing the end of a pregnancy. However, if she has not had any changes to her mammary glands (I did not see any noticeable change in the photo from March), it is unlikely that she is approaching the end of a pregnancy. Abdominal distension this prominent in the absence of pregnancy could be due to fluid (a sign of liver failure, right sided heart failure, infection, etc.) or a benign or malignant mass, all of which can be quite severe. At this point, Homegirl should be examined by a vet urgently to evaluate her overall health and may need to take x-rays or perform an ultrasound of her abdomen to get to the bottom of this issue.
