My dog has pink drainage after surgery and running. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 5 months old | 28 lbs

Rosco had surgery on Friday to remove a perianal tumor. He's had some drainage since Friday, but tonight it's much more. Earlier tonight I had him in the front yard and he took off running full speed and I had to run fast after him to catch him. Now he's having a lot more drainage than the past 2 days. The drainage is pink & watery. It has a slight strange smell, but not necessarily unpleasant or bad smelling. Could this be caused by his excessive activity today & should I be overly concerned?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, this drainage could be due to excessive activity which in turn it can cause a seroma which is essentially an accumulation of fluid at the incision site which can result in drainage. Another possibility is an infection. Even though his discharge does not have a smell to it, it can still be due to an infection. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian when possible (for example next Tuesday when they open again). The reason is that that region is very prone to infections as it is so close to the anus and if an infection is present, you want to treat it appropriately. In the meantime, keep the area clean and keep him as quiet as possible to prevent any further issues. If the incision forms any scabs, avoid picking the scabs. Good luck!     This could be from excess of activity as you described but at this stage, considering your description of it, it does not sound like infected or abnormal.
    I would recommend to restrict exercise as much as possible and if discharge become very cloudy or bloody to have it checked by your local vet.
    You can keep it clean with salt water bath or very diluted hibiscrub.
    Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching.

Some drainage after drain removal is often expected as the volume is increasing I recommend you get her rechecked at your vets office in the morning, it may be necessary to replace the drain until the wound has further healed. It is positive that the fluid is not foul smelling and pinkish-brown indicates no current, active bleeding so unless anything changes waiting for regular office hours would be appropriate

It can be normal to see a small amount of blood-tinged/clear fluid (what we term serosanguinous discharge) from an incision within the first 24-48 hours following a surgical procedure. This discharge will typically decrease in amount and should have resolved within 48 hours following surgery. Clinical signs that could indicate a problem with the incision (such as dehiscence or infection) or abdomen would include a swelling that was not previously noted that is painful and may be firm or fluid-filled, discharge that looks purulent (pus) or has a foul odor, extreme reddening of the incision, or if Ashleigh is exhibiting lethargy, fever, inappetance, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Some degree of discharge may be expected, especially if Princess is overly active. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, odor, redness, or changes in amount or appearance of the discharge. Keep an e-collar (cone) on Princess to prevent licking. Avoid excessive running jumping and rough play. If you are concerned, have her rechecked sooner than Tuesday. A culture of the discharge can be submitted to diagnose infection.

My dog's surgery site is oozing. Is this normal after growth removal?
A small amount of straw-colored or blood-tinged fluid is common after surgery and usually isn't a concern. Just try to keep the incisions free of discharge by gently cleaning with a warm wash cloth. If the incisions look very red, puffy, and have thick discharge that has a foul odor, then an infection could be developing. If this is the case, I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian to have the incisions evaluated. I hope this helps and that Seide feels better soon!

My dog's incision is red and oozy after surgery. What should I do?
This does look very moist and like an infection is starting. If your veterinarian sent home any pain medication, make sure to continue using it as directed. If you didn’t get any, make sure to get some tomorrow morning along with some antibiotics. You can use hydrogen peroxide or warm soapy water to gently dab on the area and then gently pat it dry. Apply some topical antibiotic ointment or cream such as Neodporin or Neosporin Plus which has topical lidocaine. Make sure the cone stays on as he will want to lick or bite at this. Try to get in to your vet first thing in the morning for a recheck.

My dog's recent surgery incision is discharging. Is it normal?
Hello. Thanks for the picture. Things look pretty good. It is a little irritated at the top, but the majority of the incision looks perfect. I would just clean away any discharge with a little warm water & not fuss too much with things. Once the staples are out, everything will calm down & heal well. My dog's spay incision is leaking a smelly liquid. Is it infected?
Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. While the antibiotics should prevent a real nasty infection from progressing, I would also recommend gently cleaning the area with dilute betadine and warm water. Add a couple of tablespoons of the betadine into 1/2 cup of warm water, & clean off any serum that has accumulated around the incision. Do not scrub the incision. Dry the area, & you can wrap her abdomen using an absorbant pad & either vetwrap or coban. Most general pharmacies will have all this. You can also place an infant t-shirt on her, tying up the bottom to cinch her just in front of the hindlegs. Keep the cone on, & clean the wound several times a day. If it is not healing or the discharge increases or changes in any way, see your vet immediately. Good luck with her, she should be fine in 7-10 days.
