My dog's persistent groin rash isn't healing with vet meds. What now?

It does look like a skin infection but the origin (bacterial, fungal, yeast) I don't know just by looking at it. If it is bacterial, sometimes oral antibiotics are needed if topical therapy is not working. I don't know what cream you are using as I am not aware of a chlorhexidine cream, or how long you have been using it, so it's hard for me to comment much more on what you are already doing. I personally like these chlorhexidine wipes because they also contain an anti-fungal/anti-yeast component (climabazole) and a component to help repair the skin (phytosphingosine) so it is gentle. So, if she is licking, you will need to get an E-collar (cone) for her to wear until this is healed. So, if you want to try the medicated pads, I would do that. If there is still not resolution after a few weeks then she should go back to the vet. Skin maladies typically take quite a long time to respond completely to treatment so as long as it's not bothering her too much just continue on for a few more weeks. Skin lesions like you are describing can be due to a variety of causes, including allergies, contact irritation, heat, an infection, or another underlying issue. While I do think a diet trial may be helpful, dogs typically are allergic or sensitive to proteins in food, not grains, so a switch in the protein basis of the diet (including all treats!) may be beneficial. I would recommend having it re-evaluated by a veterinarian, and further diagnostics (such as a cytology, which examines the skin under the microscope) done to determine what may be causing it, so a long-term plan can be made. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). The following products can be found online and can be tried as a first line approach: Douxo PS Calm shampoo, Essential 6 spot on by dermoscent, Krillex Krill oil chews. I like the Lord of the Rings reference with Legolas's name, I am a big fan and can say that this is the first Legolas dog that I have heard of. I like it! It may take more than 2 days to see any changes with the area. If it is worsening, I would certainly contact the veterinarian and let them know as something else may need to be prescribed. The products I like to use are listed below and can be found online quite easily. I hope these help! If the symptoms persist and the rash does not go away, you may need to consider switching the dog food to see if this is a food allergy. If Legolas has been lying in the grass, this could be a grass allergy and I would recommend bathing him after he has been playing in the grass each time. This certainly does look very uncomfortable for poor Gizmo! Given that he has had testing and treatment with no resolution of the problem, I would recommend a consult with a veterinary dermatologist. You can find one in your area on www. acvd.org.

Hello. This is very typical of an allergic dermatitis reaction. Your treatment is appropriate so just continue until the skin is fully healed. Then, at the first sign of it coming back, start the cream again. You should also contact your veterinarian to see if the newer anti-allergy medications like Apoquel or Cytopoint would be appropriate to prevent these flare ups from happening.
