My dog's teeth look bad. Is it periodontal disease? Does he need a cleaning?

Oscar has a significant amount of tartar buildup on his tooth. His other teeth are likely in similar condition. Ideally, he should be examined by your veterinarian then have a complete dental cleaning. Dental x-rays should be done to have a look below the gum line. A dentistry requires general anesthesia, so blood work may be recommended beforehand.

I see some swelling of his gums around those moles and a fair amount of plaque. Daily brushing will not correct this. He does need to see a vet for a dental cleaning, polishing, and scaling. Thank you for providing a picture of Shad's teeth! It looks like he has some tartar build up on that canine tooth, and I see his gums along his teeth are red. This is a sign of gingivitis. It looks like it's time for a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing. I would give his vet a call on Monday to set up an appointment to have this done within the next week or two. Hi, According to the pic I think it is a tartar built up. Too much plaque and tartar build-up can push the gums away from the teeth, exposing new areas for bacteria to develop which causes inflammation of the dog's gums (also seen in the picture the gum line seems inflamed). But it can also lead to cavities, infection, tissue destruction, tooth loss, and even pus (abscess) formation. So please schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to see if your dog is a candidate for a dental scale and polish.

Hi and thanks for your request. This presentation is likely to be caused by a severe tartar accumulation and possibly an infection of the tooth. Severe gingival retraction and root exposure is evident. A vet check up is required as only with a dental procedure (descale and polish and possibly an extraction) this will be resolved.

Poor Gracie! From what I can see in the photos, it does look like she has severe periodontal disease. I can't tell for sure if she will need extractions or not, as we usually have to check each tooth with a probe during the dental cleaning under anesthesia to evaluate whether it is healthy or not. I do think that Gracie definitely needs a dental procedure to get rid of the tartar and evaluate her teeth more closely, so I would recommend scheduling this with your veterinarian when you are able to. He/she can give you a better idea of what she may need during the procedure after checking her mouth in person.

Your dog is missing some of the upper incisor teeth. They probably fell out either due to trauma or infection; infection is most likely. There is nothing you can do for that now. But you can make sure the rest of her teeth stay healthy so she doesn't lose any more teeth.
