My dog has a perineal hernia. Is it an emergency? Will neutering help?

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 4 lbs

I adopted a 8 year old unneutered male Maltese 4lbs. He has a very small perineal hernia it does not seem to hurt him he poops and eats normal. But you can feel that there a small bump . He is going to be neutered next month. Will the hernia correct itself after neuter? Is it an emergency to correct it? What can I do to prevent it from getting big?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The perineal hernia will not correct by itself, it will not get better after castration either. It may stay as a small hernia and you will never have to do anything about it, but it may get bigger and you may have to get it fixed surgically. It is not an emergency as long as Bodie is going to the toilet without any difficulties.
There is not much that you can do to prevent it. You have to avoid constipation, and his diet should be rich in fibre.

So sorry that your dog is having this problem. Surgery is recommended for perineal hernias because the bladder or intestines can become trapped in the hernia which can be a very serious problem. If the hernia is small than the medical management that you are doing may work but your dog is at risk of having an entrapment if the hernia is not fixed surgically.

If it is an umbilical hernia (at the belly button), then those are pretty benign and not very concerning. If it is an Inguinal hernia then there isn’t much to do except make a plan for surgery. It only becomes an emergency if intestines gets trapped inside it, and if that happens they get very sick very quickly. I’m glad you have an appointment set and can make a plan. Yes, I would recommend at the least having Dino neutered. Perianal hernias are almost always due to increased testosterone levels which weakens the muscle of the pelvic floor. Dog anal hernia: Can diet manage it, or is surgery necessary?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dino. I am guessing you are referring to a perineal hernia based on your description. You can attempt to manage him with a high fiber diet with extra moisture such as adding canned food or water to the dry food. He will likely need a prescription stool softener as well. In my experience, this will help, but I still find the dog will need surgery. When the dog requires repeated enemas or manual evacuation of the feces by the veterinarian, you will know medical management is not working. I have also seen a rectal prolapse from the dog straining to defecate. Neutering will helps as well with hernia repair. I hope this information helps!

My 8-week-old puppy has a hernia. Will he need surgery or neutering?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your picture it appears as though Kilo has an umbilical hernia. They are non painful and do not have to be fixed. They usually do not cause a problem. They are genetic and it is not recommended to breed dogs that have them. Some dogs that have umbilical hernias are also cryptorchid (undescended testicle(s)). I can tell you that most of my clients fix the hernia when they spay or neuter the puppy. If you are not going to breed Kilo then it is recommend to neuter him but this is your personal choice. I would wait until he is a year old then decide. Neutering doesn't protect against prostate cancer but it does prevent all the other prostate diseases. If he marks in your house or becomes aggressive I recommend neutering. I hope this helps!

Hello. Perineal surgeries can be tricky & should be left to experienced surgeons. There are many structures involved in the surgical repair of a perineal hernia including the pelvic diaphragm, the perineal fascia, and all the nerves & vessels in the proximity of these structures. Puppy belly lump: When should I repair his hernia before neutering?

Milo’s a cutie! That does look like a hernia, which is a rift in the abdominal muscle wall where intestines protrude through. Some hernia’s are reducible meaning you can push the bowels back into the abdomen. Some are not, and you are correct, there is always a change that they can get bigger and more dangerous because if they are big enough for a loop of bowel to pass through and twist on itself/strangulate….that can be life threatening. It is best to have the hernia repaired (they’re not removed…rather they bowel is pushed back through and the opening in the abdominal wall is sutured closed) at the time at of the neuter to minimize the number of anesthetic events Milo undergoes. This can be done earlier than 6 months….e.g. at 5 months. You can discuss early neutering and hernia repair this with your vet or wait 2 months and have both done when he is 6 months. Good luck!

My dog's umbilical hernia wasn't removed after neuter. Is it normal?

If the hernia is not reducible, meaning when you push it it does NOT go back into the body, then it does not need to be fixed. It is only a cosmetic blemish. If the hernia IS reducible, where you can push it back into the body, then it should be repaired.

My puppy has a groin bulge that comes and goes. Is it a hernia?
