Are my dog's perianal gland and anal sac tumors the same thing?

You are very welcome and honestly, though we wish you weren't in this situation, we're very glad to here. The progression growth for this type of tumor varies greatly by pet. This could be something that has been going on for a while and may always be there without showing much symptom. You'll want to continue monitoring her for any discomfort and report any changes to your doctor. At that time, if it ever comes, you might discuss changes her diet to a softer food. Be sure any changes are made with approval of your treating physician though. With Kidney and Pancreatic concerns diet can be very important. I see that Baobei isn't neutered, and a type of tumor called a perianal adenoma are common in intact males. There is a malignant version of this tumor called a perianal adenocarcinoma, and while it is is less common that the perianal adenoma, it carries a fair to guarded prognosis. I would have him seen by a vet to diagnose if this growth is benign or malignant, and the vet can discuss treatment options with you.

The majority of these tumors are benign though a small percentage of them are malignant. I recommend you take him to your veterinarian for a test called a fine needle aspirate which can help distinguish these tumors from other more concerning tumors. If it truly is a perianal gland tumor, most of the time they resolve or greatly improved by neutering the dog as they are driven by hormones. If they are not bothering him, this may be enough. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Anal gland tumors are usually adenocarcinomas. The good news is that in general they tend to progress rather slowly. With no therapy, usually it will another 1-4 months before you start noticing signs of the tumor getting the best of him. How long it will take depends on how advanced it is right now. This tumor does not tend to be painful unless it spreads to the bones which is rare but in that case you would notice limping for example. When they get big enough they can affect defecation for example and so the first indications you would get at home that the tumor is progressing and affecting him is if he starts having trouble defecating. Based on the location, often times these tumors are benign in nature and are known as perianal adenomas though about 10% are malignant and again it could be really any other tumor type. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. If the lump is associated with one of the anal sacs (glands at about 4 and 8 o clock inside the anal sphincter) it could be an apocrine gland tumor. Apocrine glands are sweat glands. There are also other lumps that can occur in this area so it depends on if the lump is in the typical location for one of these glands. One thing that could be considered before surgery is a needle aspirate with cytology. We use this test commonly to try to diagnose lumps before surgery. It can be helpful to know what it is before surgery because if malignant some tests may be recommended before surgery and the surgery plan sometimes changes.
