My dog has a lump on his penis that keeps coming back. What is it?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 9 months old | 23 lbs

I have a 3yo male neutered Cavanese that has recently developed a hematoma on the top of his penis. He is otherwise normal with no symptoms. I applied some essential oil topically and it resolved. However, about a week later, another smaller one appeared.

If these truly are hematomas, I would be concerned that Leo may have a problem with his platelets, which are the cells in the body that allow the blood to clot. In the absence of trauma, hematomas can occur spontaneously if platelets are very low, because the body is bleeding into places such as the space under the skin. There may also be bleeding into internal cavities, such as the chest or abdomen.

As these spots have resolved and recurred, I recommend getting Leo checked out by your vet, at least to determine if his platelet count is normal. If it is, I recommend having your vet check this new spot to see if it might be a skin tumor, such as a hemangioma (benign) or a hemangiosarcoma (malignant)

Unless it is actually bleeding (dripping blood), there is nothing you need to do. The body will repair this in time. Should the hematoma get bigger, ie the red spot expand, you will need to take Gus to a vet for a coagulation check, as he may have a problem with his blood clotting ability. Should you find more red spots like this, for example in his mouth , on his gums or in his ears, then he needs to be taken to the vet right away as he may have ingested an anticoagulant (such as warfarin or similar rat poison).

Hello. I am sorry to hear that Odin has a lump. Bleeding masses on the skin can be anything from a wart which is of no concern, to cutaneous hemangiosarcoma. Bringing your dog to the vet to have it looked at, and possibly removed or have a biopsy done is the best thing you can do for Odin. Without looking at it, and ultimately without a biopsy, you cannot know if it is cancerous or not. Good luck with Odin.

My senior neutered dog has a pink lump near his privates. What is it?

This may be blood blister, a tumor, or a small benign growth. The only way to know what it is and if it is a cancer is to have your vet remove it or biopsy it. At his age, cancer such as a mast cell tumor or hemangiosarcomas are possibilities and the smaller they are when removed, the better the chance it can be completely removed.

Hello there and thank you for your post! From the pictures you have posted, it the red blood blister like mass you are seeing is most likely what we call a hemangioma, which is typically benign. However, hemangiomas can turn into hemangiosarcomas that are cancerous. I would recommend having this removed if possible to prevent this from progressing. If Gizmo does not do well at the vet, you can ask if they can provide you with an anti-anxiety medication / sedative to administer prior to an appointment to get this looked at. I hope this helps! This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. This is not going to away on its own and needs attention. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That area definitely looks like it needs to be removed. It likely has a poor blood supply and healing can be difficult. I recommend having it removed and have it sent to a pathologist to determine what it is. There is no way to know just by looking at it. I would see if you can move your vet appointment up to have the mass looked at sooner. When the skin is ulcerated like that, most pets won't leave it alone and it can get worse.
