Is it normal for my dog's penis to have a bump when he's excited?

Hello. No question in medicine is weird! Best to check things out. Swollen penis and bumps are not normal. This could be an infection or could be masses or other causes of swelling. I would suggest getting it checked out. If the penis itself is swollen vs. the skin around it, then this can be a severe emergency as a swollen penis for more than 4 hours can result in loss of the penis. Good luck with Tonza!

If it was, then what you likely saw was his bulbourethral glands. These are normal structures of the penis, and they become enlarged when the dog is aroused. Even neutered dogs can become aroused. Hello and thank you for your questions about Jonesy. It's difficult to know if this is normal or not without being able to examine him. Some dogs do have a protrusion above the urethral opening on their penis and it's often lighter colored than the rest of the tissue. This is normal. However, if you are noticing him licking more than normal, this often indicates discomfort. Young male dogs, especially if they are not neutered, often get infections in the prepuce and this can cause excessive licking and often an increase in discharge. Male dogs can also get bladder infections which can also cause increased licking. Since Jonesy cannot talk and tell you why this is happening, I recommend to have him examined this week.
