Can my dog safely chew Paws Happy Life Super Bones without harm?

Generally speaking eating high protein in this fashion is not detrimental to the pet. In fact the more we research the impact of a consistently high protein diet on the health of dogs, we are finding that they tolerate it rather well. The only time we focus on limiting protein ingestion is when the pet has a diagnosed kidney or heart malfunction.

As with any bone or hard chew toy, there are concerns for tooth trauma. In my experience, I've seen many broken teeth from dogs chewing on deer antlers, hard bones, etc. I would usually recommend against giving these for that reason. As Rocky is a larger breed dog, the pieces of bone that he is chewing off of the main bone should not be a problem and they should pass through his intestines just fine. However, if given a large enough bone and he eats it whole, this could lead to a GI foreign body obstruction as the bone tries to pass through and gets stuck. Dental fractures and accidents can occur with some of the very hard chew toys and I generally do not recommend these for use long term or when not directly supervised. When dogs are overweight, they are at risk of diabetes, heart problems, and excess stress on the joints among other health issues. In addition, I am not a fan of bones for dogs, even uncooked ones. That's because they can break teeth when a dog is chewing on them, and can cause GI obstruction. If you would like to give Bruno a chew bone, I would make it a very rare treat to protect his health.

The nylabone is generally safe to play with and is difficult to chew, so the little bits that could get ingested are not toxic or enough to cause problems. If a bigger piece was somehow ingested, then this would be a problem. Veterinary dentists warn that nylabones are too hard and can lead to tooth fractures, so it's not commonly recommended anymore. What happens is the chewing causes tiny microfractures in the teeth which can eventually result in a big slab fracture of the chewing teeth, requiring emergency dental surgery. I'd also be worried about the sharp shards, as I am not aware of any studies demonstrating the fragments dissolve in the stomach before passing through into the intestines. When you are looking for a chewing treat, try the "fingernail test" - if you can't make an indent in the treat with your fingernail, then it is too hard for your dog's teeth. I myself, am not a fan. I do see these often cause teeth to break in dogs/puppies. I would advise not to give this to your pet. It is better to get easily digestible dog dental chews (once he is a bit bigger >10 months old) or you can get kong toys that are a bit safer for him to chew on.
