Why is my nursing dog panting, pacing, and weak after birth?

My older schnauzer had puppies 3 weeks ago and has started acting odd. She paces back and forth, pants constantly, and she can't seem to run anymore. Please help!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Little Bit. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. Nursing dogs can develop a condition known as eclampsia. This is when the calcium level in the blood drops too low due to the demands of nursing the pups. It is most common in small breed dogs several weeks after giving birth. If this is the case, it can be very serious and requires treatment. I hope this information helps!

If the panting is non stop then it is not normal but panting after giving birth is considered normal in the first 24 hours after birth. one of the reasons could be exhaustion but it could also be due to milk fever which is a condition caused by lack of calcium due to milk production. in such a case i would recommend a vet visit to check her calcium level and rectify it accordingly (usually by injection and oral calcium).

Yes, this normal. Nursing causes the release of oxytocin, which in turn causes uterine contractions. Lyla is panting due to the uterine contractions. This can occur for up to two weeks. Keep in mind as well that this can be a sign of a post-partum problem, so make sure her temperature is normal (101-102.5F). If she has a fever, then she will need to see a vet immediately. My dog just had puppies, still panting, no afterbirth. Is this normal?

If you have not had a veterinarian take x-rays to determine how many puppies are left you should take her to your veterinarian or an emergency hospital to make sure all puppies are out. She could still be in labor. Low calcium would be another possibility. This could also be a behavioral change. I would not be too concerned about no afterbirth or placentas - it is fairly rare for them to cause a problem when retained.

With the symptoms you are describing, I would recommend taking Zoey to her veterinarian. I am concerned she could either have a retained puppy or low calcium and both are serious conditions that require medical treatment.
